Installed my Hypertech Tuner; Results! (2008 Mazda 3 s 5-speed)

Hey everyone,

As the title says, I got a Hypertech Tuner for my Mazda 3. I've seen people making decent gains with them and found one used for $235; so I went for it!

Otherwise my car is stock. I took the snorkel off of my air box for a bit more noise but I wasn't able to measure any performance improvement with that.

Anyway, to test it, I took my car to a big hill near me and did pulls in 3rd gear before and after installing the hypertech (I installed the hypertech in a parking lot between runs). For reference, my car is a CA emissions (I'm in NY), which required me to install the CA tune from Hypertech (installing the federal one isn't allowed by the unit). I used OBD data logging to track my RPM, speed, and some other parameters. I installed the Premium Fuel tune.

I think the most Telling stats are these: the time it took to reach different speeds (in mph) during the runs:

Times: PreFlash
20-30: 3.6
30-40: 3.1
40-50: 3
50-60: 3.2
60-70: 3.3
70-80: 3.8
80-90: 5.4

Times: Post-Flash
20-30: 2.8
30-40: 2.8
40-50: 2.6
50-60: 2.6
60-70: 3
70-80: 3.7
80-90: 5

3rd gear is at around 1500rpm at 20mph, 2250 at 30mph, 3000rpm at 40mph, 3700rpm at 50mph, 4450 at 60mph, 5175rpm at 70mph, 5890rpm at 80mph, and 6650rpm at 90mph.

As you can see, the biggest gains are in the low range; but they're significant pretty much everywhere. I am thrilled with how it feels; it's fantastic. Can't believe I got this type of change in my car for $235!

I have logs of the timing and the AFR's, I'll post them tomorrow sometime, once I get a chance to upload them. Sorry; I don't plan to go to the dyno (that would cost almost as much as the chip did...).

Hope this is helpful to someone out there!

No, it doesn't; it allows engine re-tune (for premium or regular fuel; mine is on the premium setting right now), Rev Limit adjustment (up or down up to 500rpm, in 100rpm steps), and maximum speed adjustment (or deletion). It might let you adjust the engine idle speed as well, I can't remember.

Yeah hypertech is a good buy, and you can run it with other mods and it's fine. Biggest change is the AFR under WOT. Before I was very rich at around 10:1, with the hypertech it's now around 12:1.

Is that for the 2.0 ot 2.3 engine??? I have the 3i 2.0 engine and im trying to find out whay rcu tuners can i use for the 2.0 engine. Need to know who and where i can get it from and how much??? Need accurate details

ooohhh AFRs and can you track MPG for a while and report back as well? or did you not track it beforehand?
