INJEN CAI Sounds on a P5 Auto

Hello all,

I'm about to buy an Injen CAI for my P5 and had some questions. I searched for this and read through about a thousand threads on the Injen CAI, but nothing really came through about the noise (db) increase with the addition of the CAI to a P5. Now I read and saw a video (w/ audio) about how the Intake sounds on a MSP, but it seems to me that it is specific sounding to the MSP due to the turbo. (eg. Turkey Noise and all) I also heard people say what it can sound like in between shifts on a manual tranny. Basically, I want to know what you all think or know the Injen CAI sounds like on a P5 with a Sportronic Automatic Tranny. Will the smoother shifts of the auto keep the noise level to a minimum? I have a 2003.5 P5. An Injen CAI for a 2002 P5 will fit on my 2003.5 correct? I know it sounds lame, but I am concerned about the noises my car makes. eventually I am planning on putting a Magnaflo Catback system in as well, and I understand that has a little db gain as well (stated on their website). But the CAI alone, what am i to expect on my P5 auto?

Thanks!

you'll hear a sucking sound from the engine bay as your engine is able to pull in more air through the open air filter. how much louder? i'm not sure. my injen cai is pretty loud once the turbo spools, but i can keep it silent if i want to...just keep the revs down. same with your car. so long as you're not rocketing out of every corner and stoplight, you shouldn't hear too much of an increase in noise. and if you want a quiet catback, magnaflow may not be the best choice. they're kinda loud....

i love it on my auto ;) get a mazdaspeed exhaust and bam! lol ull be in heaven. - chris

My CAI made all the difference in the world.. but I dunno about having it on an auto. Part of the major loudness was taking it to redline. Then you could get an almost BOV-ish sound when you shifted. It'll definitely give your car a throaty growl.. but it won't make it roar.

growling sounds are really nice, honestly, my injen sounds much louder than my racing beat cat back system :D

I just installed the Injen CAI in my 2003.5 P5 for looks and just something to do to my P5. You will not notice the increase in sound level while your'e cruising with the stereo on. The sound, however, is very loud at WOT. You'll hear a few spurt of air sucking sound after you shut your engine down. Kinda cool.

The sound during acceleration is like a high pitch roar but btw 5K & 6K RPM the CAI becomes a resonator and the noise level is very high. Sound like a very loud 'wah' that irratates me like s*** under my shoes.

Don't expect any noticeable performance gain or any increase in MPG. The Injen looks great. I added metal brackets to reduce the movement of the CAI and the coolant bottle.

Installing the CAI on a manual actually showed some improved throttle response for me. That was awesome.

As for shutting down, it'll give a long hissssssssssssssss.. like your car's slowly exhaling. ber cool.

To answer your questions from my experience. The Injen CAI will fit on any 3rd Gen 2.0 liter Protege (Sedan/P5/MP3) auto or manual, doesn't matter.

On my auto P5, I got slightly better throttle response, and the car pulled just a little bit harder in the higher RPMs.

Your engine will have a nice growl to it, tone should be pretty much the same on a manual/automatic. I had an injen CAI and Racing Beat Exhaust on my Protege5 and the growl from the engine at WOT was louder then the exhaust, but it didn't bother me at crusing speeds. And when you turn the car off it will make a pleasing hiss sound right after you shut the engine down as air exits the intake.

Mine is also an auto but I didn't notice any gain in performance throughout the normal RPM range. My low RPM throttle response is now slightly decreased which actually makes it accelerates a little smoother. The engine bogs a little from a dead stop.

I do not have any other mod so any single mod that I make will not make any difference. This is true with all the other N/A 4 bangers I had. My turbo ride, however, is another story. Less than $400 in intake mods & gained about 30 hp.
