Turbocharged Mazda 3 on the Way in 2006
By by: Oliver Dueck

Hot on the heels of the Mazda 6 MPS that debuted in September at the Paris Auto Show (and goes on sale in North America next year as the MazdaSpeed 6), an MPS version of the popular Mazda 3 compact sedan and hatchback is expected to go on sale in 2006.

Powered by a detuned version of the turbocharged 2.3 liter direct injection engine found in the 6 MPS, the 3 MPS would go head to head with competitors such as the Subaru WRX and the all-new fifth generation Volkswagen GTI. Expect this hot 3 to have around 220 horsepower powering the front wheels. In what is surely an attempt to distance the 3 MPS from the 6 MPS in both price and performance, all wheel drive will not be available. While this may disappoint some enthusiasts, it does mean less weight and cost important considerations in the sport compact arena.

If previous MPS and MazdaSpeed models are any indication, the 3 will offer more than a mere power upgrade. Styling enhancements, better brakes and suspension, and more chassis bracing are all expected to be part of the package. We predict that this model will be available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, but it is not known if the MPS version will be available as a sedan, hatchback, or perhaps both.

Like the 6 MPS, this car will come to North America badged as a MazdaSpeed model. While it is too early to make accurate pricing predictions, we would guess that it will have a base price of around $23,000 USD when it comes to North America in 2006.

I am not sure about the de-tuned 2.3T because they might wanna use this car for race contests like rally. I'm sure they'll go with the 2.0T AWD butt either way they decide to go I am sure they won't be any less than 220hp seeing as the MS6 is 274hp.

So, this is either:

A) old news
B) not true
C) a repost

Seems like everyone would be soiling their trousers on this board if otherwise.

Hmm.... SRT-4 is 20k. MS3 is going to start at 23k? :sigh: Mazda 3 is popular because it is priced right. I don't see how adding a turbo and some bits is worth an extra $6000. That is a lot of $!! If it's only going to make 220hp they should price it no higher than 21k.

Uhhhh... not to sound stupid but what does MPS stand for? I mean I get the gist of what it means but I thought it was MSP for Mazdaspeed? Or is that just w/the Proteges?

Agreed. If you are going to spend that much on a turboed car, why not put a few more Ks into it and get the WRX which has AWD. Detuned engine? Wth does that mean? I'd just retune it back.
We'll see, if other manufacturers up their prices then there'll be more contest.

All I know is you better get the acronyms correct or they'll start jumpin' your ass around here. :D

MPS stands for Mazda performance Series. MPS is primarily used in Europe, while Mazdaspeed is used everywhere else. I've heard the reason for this is the word 'speed' cannot be used as part of a vehicle name in Europe (this is just something I've been told, I really have no idea if this is true or not). However, as an example, the Mazdaspeed6 is called MPS 6 in Europe.

As for the Mazdaspeed3, any potential pricing information is completely hearsay.

With the current inflation rate, 23K sounds about right. I didn't know there is a 2006 SRT-4. Have any links?

Lol, you're not lying! When I first came here I was practically challenged to produce a gun when I used MP5 to describe my car. And God forbid if you use M3 to describe the Mazda3, lol! :D

Thanks wrongpres for explaining MPS. (cool)

"P5! P5!" <---- The official Mazda Protege 5 sighting call out. :D Or you could be like my hubby and his friend "OOOOOO AN NSX!" in unison like two kids in a candy store. That was just good times right there. :D

all i know is they better put a limited slip and some MUCH better motor mounts. or the neon will be better. hate to say it but the srt-4 has a nice engine and some nice parts direct from mopar like the stage 3 kit. the curent srt-4 pushes 230 and starts at 22 grand. given its still a neon (has power windows in the front and roll-downs in the back) but its still pretty damn fast for a neon. the 220 hp for the 3 turbo is bs. with a turbo the 3 should push at least 250. bottom line is if i had to make a choice for a turbo car... i'd buy an evo.
