im not sure how to name this.. engine codes and emissons??

Hi., im new here.. as starting out in the mazda world im wanting to know a few things...
for starters.. can anyone add anything to my list?
VRIS
variable resonance induction system
VICS
Variable Intake Control System
VTCS
Variable Tumble Control System
S-VT
sequential valve timing
Duratec-H
(havnt found out what it stands for) its something new which comes with svt on it..

also iv been wondering what Engine codes..(names) letters stand for.. i asked someone in TN about it for toyotas.. and they gave me a big list..
here you can see what i mean.. chekc out post #3
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t106090.html

like whts f2 mean.. fe3 ,fede, feze kl and so on..

sorry about there being something about toyota.. but i lovee toyota.. hell i love jdm cars..

FSDE is the protege engine
pretty much anything with a ZE ending is a japanese engine

the Fe3 was the late 80's turbo Mx6/626/turbo Probe engine

the KL series "KLZE KLDE" would be the V6 engines found in the Probe, MX6, and 626

im wondering on a more defined list ..like this one about toyota

before the dash is just block familys

#2 - After the Dash:

* B - Dual standard carbs (only used on non-twin cam engines, obsolete code)
* C - Californian pollution control (also most of the world)
* D - Dual carbs but more powerful than -B
* E - Electronic Fuel Injection
* F - Twin Cam (economy). Narrow Agle, Around 22 degrees between the intake and exhaust valves.
* G - Twin Cam (sports/powerful) with multiple sidedraft carbs (unless EFI). Wide Angle, 45 degrees or more between the intake and exhaust valves.
* H - Unknown but never combined with -B or -C
* I - Single point fuel injection
* II - Unknown - possibly denotes L.A.S.R.E (Lightweight Advanced Super Response Engine)
* J - Unknown, possibly autochoke, possibly another anti-pollution control
* L - Transverse mounted engine (seems to be an obsolete code)
* LPG - LPG fuel
* M - Phillipines market (details unknown)
* P - LPG fuel
* R - Low compression for regular (not super or premium) fuel.
* S - Swirl intake ports (only a few made in mid '80s)
* S - Direct injection & swirl pot pistons (starting from '97/98)
* T - Turbocharged
* U - Japanese pollution control (introduction of "U"nleaded?), (Engine uses TTC-C, TTC-L or TTC-V).
* Z - Supercharged

A list I came up with for another forum:

FMIC - Front Mount Intercooler
ITB - Individual Throttle Body
UDP - Underdrive Pulley
EBC - Electronic Boost Controller
MBC - Manual Boost Controller
EMS - Engine Management System
OBD - Onboard diagnostics (0, I, II)
FCD - Fuel Cut Defensor (HKS product)
TPS - Throttle Position Sensor
AFC - Air Fuel Converter (Super AFC, A'PEXi product)
FPR - Fuel Pressure Regulator
TCS - Traction Control System
MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure
MAF - Mass Airflow Sensor
A/F - Air Fuel (as in air fuel ratio)
AWD - All Wheel Drive
FWD - Front Wheel Drive
RWD - Rear Wheel Drive
FR - Front Engine, Rear Wheel Drive
FF - Front Engine, Front Wheel Drive
RR - Rear Engine, Rear Wheel Drive
SOHC - Single Overhead Cam
DOHC - Duel Overhead Cam
LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
LED - Light Emitting Diode
HPF - HorsepowerFreaks
VVT - Variable Valve Timing
GET - Exhaust Gas Temp.
USM - Upper Strut Mount
HLA - Hydraulic Lash Adjuster

they have to mean something.. jst like others do.. such as F stands for the 4cy family.. and the things after the F stands for things like DOHC and stuf like that.. and things like the motor having VRIC, VICS ..things like that..

Well Mazda made a bunch of different 4 cylinder blocks but not all of them started with "F". The Late 80's 1.6L models were B6 for SOHC, B6E for the DOHC, and B6T for the DOHC turbo. The 1.8L DOHC was BP, and the turbo BPT. The 2.2L were FE2, and FE3 for the turbo, IIRC and the 2.0L like the 3rd Gen Protege and 626 were FS. All of them except the B6 were DOHC so that really doesn't work either.

The new 4 cylinder motors like the Mazda3, Mazda6 and MX-5 start with MZ.

My best educated guess, considering that engine options seem to not have an effect on the lettering and that since the late 80's it's been going in an alphabetical order is that the letters are merely design stages of development. In other words...They start out with FA, but that design didn't work just right so they made some changes and got the FE motor....they kept doing that until they got to FS and that one worked perfect for what they wanted in the Protege/626 so thats the one that went into production.

the only other possible correlation is that most of the F series motors had cylinder measurments that would suggest they are based off of the B series motors only with a little more stroke.
