2002 Protege 5
so i went to knoxville this past weekend in the 5. had a great time. on the way back to athens GA i stopped at a QT to take a piss. left the car running with my friend in it. come back, get in and press the brake pedal to put it in reverse, pedal goes to the floor. open the hood, resivior has some fluid but looks low. inspect each wheel to see if i have a leak and boom! all the brake fluid is on the ground behind the passenger side rear wheel. worst part is that im in the middle of sticksville and its sunday night. call AAA, get it towed and had a great friend come get us and drive us the rest of the way to athens. call the shop today and they say its a ruptured brake line. i cant believe that since i have the Goodridge lines but i guess i have to take their word. even worse, they are charging me $90 for the parts (one brake line) and $175 for labor. i could do the job myself in less than an hour if i could get the car some place where i could work on it but since i have no brakes im screwed. ok, im done ranting. just thought id get that off my chest

Thats what I am wondering. EVEN if it costs you $100 to get it towed to a hotel parking lot or your house, it will still be cheaper!

Some hotels will have a problem with you working on a car in their parking lot but I also know a lot that if they aren't full, for the most part, they won't bother you!

How old was this badridge brake line? Was it chaffing on the little keeper thing from shock action? Not close enough to use emergency brake to limp rest of way home? Is shop wanting that much for ss or stock line? bad timing on that happening, bummer. I had one on the front the first set of ss brake lines get chafed into leaking from making line go in stock location. Didn't put it there this time, but didn't have problems with rears.

i would have it towed but it is so far from my apt and even further from home. i know i could do the work myself no problem. i dont know how it happened but i told them to keep the parts they take off of the car so i can see the problem. im just going to bend over and take it on this one i guess

If you have AAA Plus, you get up to 100 miles of free towing. If you don't, it might be worth the upgrade, depending on how far away your apt/home is. In my girlfriend's old car, I threw a rod somewhere between Orlando and Miami, but luckily I had AAA Plus so I had the car towed on a flatbed to Miami. Just a thought!

Try to see if a forum member lives close to where your car is and wouldn't mind you fixing it there.

knoxville is fine, i dont know what you dont like about it. hannah's in the old city has always treated me well. and its a pretty city with the river and all. not to mention, there is tons of pussy to be had. last time i was there i saw a silver 5 with a body kit parked in front of the bi-lo near west hills mall. you know that car? didnt look bad. if you guys are ever having a meet up there i may come up. maybe head to deal's gap? my buddy that i visit up there rides sport bikes there and is always telling me how fun it is. i need to check it out

I'm pretty sure there is a screening process here at UT which keeps the ugly chicks from being accepted.

*or* remove the bad line and cap it -reservice the fluid and get it home... ;)

THEN work on it...
Check the other lines for chaffing too.

SS lines are notorious for doing this. They will abrade on the INSIDE and then blow without any warning. I had SS lines on my 240 a long time ago and ALWAYS cleaned them and inspected them. I was always spooked that they would pop on me at a bad time.

If its mostly highway miles, you probably could VERY CAREFULLY limp home on the E-Brake... I've done it before, just for fun and as long as you leave PLENTY of distance, you'll be fine.

FYI AAA will not tow a car from a place that can fix it... My car broke down 2 miles from my house i walked home, put my tool box in my other car drove back to find it had been towed. The car was towed to a storage facility that happened to be a repair shop. I called aaa and they refused to tow the car anywhere else because it could be fixed by the facility that had it. I ended up bailing the car out for $200 and we pushed it down the road and called aaa (with someone elses account) and had it towed home. :p

Can you elaborate on this?

jason, that sucks, I could fix that for you too and I have space and tools if it happened near me then that woulda worked out for you, sorry to hear though. give me a call.

I'd tow it to an advance and get whatever lines you need to get it home, they would definately let you work in the parking lot too.
