-- Boston Chapter Ice Racing Bulletin for March 1, 2008 --

Sponsored by Bavarian Autosport -- Thank You!

We are Ice Racing tomorrow, Sunday, March 2nd!!! Lots of CRITICAL details below!

Due to the recent heavy snowfall, there will not be a lot of room to maneuver, and you may have to drive through more snow than usual -- in the parking area and on the course. Those without good all-season or better tires might think twice about venturing out to this event. The existence of a Practice Course is yet to be determined.

The Bulletin will be the ONLY place where you can get the location and proper directions!! We are NOT using the old Ledges location listed on the website!

Bring LUNCH and a FULL gas tank! Leaving the ice is NOT an option, unless you are leaving for the day.

New Entry Fees! $20 for Members and $25 for non-Members.

Pre-Registration via the website is REQUIRED. Many more details on Ice Racing are there as well:

E-mail me if you have a problem or question!

We are still running on Newfound Lake, but will be using a private entrance. PLEASE be courteous so that we can continue using this entrance!!

Be VERY careful in the driveway, it is icy and snowy and narrow! I know this is not the time to tell you, but you also must be VERY careful when you leave! It is hard to see as you pull onto the road, so do so slowly and cautiously!

Registration will be in the back of the white Boston Chapter BMW CCA van once you get onto the ice.

Directions:
Route 93 North.
Exit 23 (New Hampton).
Left off the ramp onto Route 104 West towards Bristol.
About 6 miles to Bristol.
(good place to get gas, only one store after this)
At the light in Bristol, go straight through, now on Route 3A North.
Continue on 3A North for about 9 miles.
You will see "Hillside Inn Condominiums" on your left as you are climbing a hill.
You will also see Newfound Lake (and perhaps the course!) behind the white condo/inn building.
Left onto North Shore Road at the top of that hill.
GO SLOW IT IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY BUMPY, think 10-20mph (doubled adjective intentional)!!
After about one mile you will go up and then down a long steep hill.
Get on the BRAKES and go SLOW down the hill!!
FIRST left turn as you are coming down the hill.
It is marked with an orange cone with a BMW Roundel on it.

(There is a private dirt road 50 feet beyond the driveway – Lake Shore Drive -- too far)
(If you reach the Newfound Marina, you have gone 500 feet too far)

Remember, SLOW and CAUTIOUS in the driveway.
Bear right in the driveway where it splits.
Proceed straight out onto the lake.
Absolutely NO parking on the property.

This will be a ONCE on, ONCE off event. Bring lunch, water, and a full fuel tank! If you leave for lunch or gas, you will be asked not to return. Be smart about WARM clothes, gloves, and shoes. You can always switch shoes to take your runs, but don't stand around all day in sneakers!

Please note that the e-mail Bulletin does not distribute to everyone immediately -- it is currently taking up to an hour or more to reach some people. Please check the website version of the Bulletin for immediate status. Use the dropdown menu to select the Ice Racing Bulletin:

Wow! Had a great time! ...and got a few free lessons too!

It was a bit chilly in the morning but things warmed up later on. The packed powder in the morning gave alot of people a false sense of security and the result was cars in snow banks all afternoon. The AWD crew was the worst believe it or not. Some of them got so deep it took two trucks to pull out. I'll have photos available soon.

Edit!

Got three videos uploaded.
Oleg's 1st run of the day in his RX-8 w/ sow tires <-- 360 wipeout recovery!
Oleg's 3rd run of the day in his RX-8 w/ snow tires
Chris' 3rd run of the day in his MS6 w/ snow tires

And some photos...

So quiet. Looked like fun though. I was home with 102.5 degree temps. The flu sux.

A guy named Rafael was driving the red 8...with all-seasons!

The snow and wind has a way of sucking up the sound. Even some of the modified cars were virtually silent on the ice. Plus, with glare-ice for traction spinning the wheels would only put you in the snow banks (as demonstrated by several Mini drivers throughout the day).

did they mention anything about future races? i couldn't go this weekend and didn't find out until this morning but want to

As long as it stays cold, I'm sure they'll be out there for the next couple of Sundays. Go to http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/ and sign up for the Ice Racing bulletin. They usually send out an email on Wednesday with tentative plans and then the final decision is made on Saturday afternoon.
