I need an apartment, help please!

Hey!
So I need an apartment closer to my school in Macedonia for the winter. I cant seem to find anything and this is the first time I have ever looked at apartments so I am not totally sure what I am doing. I thought maybe you guys would be able to help since many of you are around in this area.

These are the snags I am having:
-Macedonia is way too expensive. So that option is out.

-I am looking for something still close to my home (Litchfield OH) so I can still come home and such if needed. And I can have visitors. That area puts me around Hinckley and Richfield but I cant seem to find anything in those areas. Any other areas to suggest?

-I only plan on staying there during the winter months. I understand most places are for a full year...what happens if I move out sooner? Is the only thing that would happen is them keeping my deposit?

Thanks for any help/suggestions! I am pretty clueless on this.

if you sign a year lease - which most places want - you are responsible for paying the rent for the whole year. if you break it or move out, you still are required to pay until your lease is up. sometimes after you've been there a year, you can sign a clause to let you break it with giving 2 months notice, or something like that, but it'll cost you extra per month. i did that when i first moved out here, after my first year was up, for personal reasons, i paid an extra $20/month so i could move out with 2 months notice (of course i was there for another 4 years : / ) ... you could look into parma or broadview heights or seven hills ... parma is cheap and if you get somewhere on the south east side you'll be close to 77 and 82 ... there are PLENTY of apartment buildings in parma ... i'm not familiar with anything more south or east of there ... i'll look in tomorrows paper when i get it and see if i see anything.

if some places are desperate for tenants, they MAY offer a 6 month lease, it may be a bit more per month, but then at least you are only committed for 6 months. good luck!!

There are nice apts my buddy lived in on 303 just off of 71 to the west. Just a thought. Not sure how much they are tho.

My finacee's brother had a year lease and when he got an internship he sublet it during that time to someone else. Technically he was still on the hook for the rent as far as the apartment owner was concerned, but he had a legal contract with the person who rented from him. The trick is finding someone that is willing to rent it for a short period of time.

Macedonia is only about 20 miles or so from Kent. There would be lots of choices for apartments in that area because of KSU and it would be easier to find someone to rent it from you when you don't need to live there.

Thanks Lauri! I wasnt sure how it all works to be able to leave early. I have been looking at Broadview heights as well. Thank you!

Jordan, do you remember what the name of the place was your friend was staying at? if it was somewhere on 303 around 71 would be right around the area I was looking!

Will, I never thought about renting it out from me if needed! I mean yeah i agree it would be tricky but if I had to do it. Kent is a little too far to the east for me, I would rather stick to the west of Macedonia but if last resort I needed something, I could look around Kent for sure. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's right behind taco bell and some gas station on the southside of 303 about an eighth mile west of 71. I'll ask him what it was called and get back to you!

going to look at a place in Hinckley tomorrow. It is a duplex with the upstairs already rented to a lady with a separate entrance and the downstairs is available. Nervous about it but we will see....

I went to look at a house 2 weeks ago in Hinckley and fell in love with it. now the guy is being a jerk about it and wont return my phone calls, tests, or emails about it. I have told him that I will take it and that i can give him the deposit and still nothing. It makes me so frustrated becuase I really liked it and it was in the perfect location. Now I am stuck still with nothing. I just dont have motivation to do it now that i found something and it is gone. I dont know, i guess I am just bitter about it.
I want something in Hinckley or richfield. I just dont feel that anywhere else would be where i need it to be between work and home here.

So...I was scanning craigslist to see what else was available and what do ya know.....that house I love in Hinckley is back up....but the guy wont return any of my ways of contacting him....so frustrated. I promise I am not a bad person. I dont know why he wont let me have it....
Part of me wants to be sneaky and have someone else sign the rental contract and then just mention that someone else might be staying with them but it would all be safe and blah blah blah and then I would stay there and pay the person who signed the contract and they would then pay the rent. nothing is switched over into the renters name so it could potentially work....in theory but my luck not so much.

ugh, poor justine. i'm thinking it's your age ... but if he let's it sit long enough, maybe he'll come around. also, did you tell him you only want 6 months? he could be holding out for someone more long term. no owner likes having to search for new tenants every year 'cause they inevitably lose rent while the place sits empty while they search once again ... a hint, tell potential landlords that you are looking for long term ... they LOVE that!! don't give up. maybe it wasn't meant to be ... keep looking and you'll find something, i'm sure.

Thanks for the advice! I will take all I can get now. My age seems to be at the route of many of the things I am dealing with. People think I am too young but yet no such luck on being given a chance to prove myself. I keep looking so we will see. I havent given up yet...
