Man, I know exactly what you went through. I had my own bout of stupidity a few years back. It was when I still had my '72 fleetside chevy. One day, I was racing my buddy on an open stretch of road and I gunned it (wanting to test out the corvette L-82 engine I had just put into the truck) and the gas pedal stuck to the floor. Talk about seeing your life pass before your eyes. I was slamming on the brakes and sweating bullets. Since the brakes were original (drum/drum), it was impossible for them to stop me. That much horsepower at full throttle was too much for them to handle. Just when I'm thinking its all over, the gas pedal comes up off the floor and the truck starts slowing down. WTF was going on here?!
I never did find out what happened and my mechanic couldn't find any problem either. Six months later, I'm camping with some friends, we're at the campground parking lot, the pavement was slightly damp so I thought hey, great burnout opportunity. So, with all my friends watching, I stomp on it, and the pedal sticks to the floor again. Again, I'm on the brakes and nothing is working. Oh, and then it lets off again and I stop. I sat there, like an idiot, really going over what just happened to see if I could figure it out.
Right before the pedal came back up off the floor, my foot had slightly shifted backwards, bringing with it my thick floormat. Turns out, when I stomped on the pedal, the floormat would slightly shift forward and in essence, "lock" the pedal to the floor so it could not come back up. Well, that was the end of those floormats, and I invested in some very thin ones that didn't reach under the gas pedal.
So there you have it, I'm stupid too, so don't feel too bad.
