I have an '09 5. I bought it used with 27xxx miles in Sept 2010. Since day 1, the HVAC knob lights have not consistently worked. I probably took it to the dealer 10 separate times to get it figured out. At one point, the technician said F*** it and just installed a whole new outlet connection box inside there. Well, my warranty is done, so I'm not going to pay the dealer to fix it. But I'm wondering if anyone else has had the issue with the lights?? (What sparked this topic is that my center light has been out for about 6+ months, and last night I notices the Fan Speed knob (far right) light went out!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Interesting - I just picked up a certified '09 myself last month - and the backlighting on my HVAC knobs have NEVER worked.
At first, I was wondering if they were even supposed to be backlit, but got confirmation from folks on the board that yes, they should be.
I have an appointment next week at my dealer for them to fix it - and it should be covered under my warranty....

hmmm. This is interesting. Can someone who is an original owner and know their lights work since day one post a pic of what it 'should' look like? Most of us seem to be 2nd owners and may not know there's a problem with the HVAC lighting, or Mazda secretly changed things on various years that we do not know about. My '08 certainly does not have anything on the HVAC that is 'backlit'. Only LEDs on the knobs and the dash top display. Is something missing?
The dash is fairly easy. There is a video of it on youtube too, I just can't find it right now.

Ok, that looks like mine. I had a brain fart and forget those dials are backlight (doh, lack of a visual). Also, I wasn't sure if the 3 HVAC dials are suppose to have a green ring like the radio knobs.Here you go.

I just went through this. 2 of mine were just loose. Tightened the up and they are good again.
I'd take your dash apart and check them personally.
Dealer fixed it!
There was a wire that came loose. They replugged it in, and its now operational.
The lights look just like what is in the picture that was provided by the other member in this thread.
Much better now that I can see the hvac controls at night!
