i have been having a slight humming noise for about 2 months now. it seems to come out about 4o mph. sometimes it is louder than other times. when you slow down from anywhere above 40 mph it will make noise until you come to a stop. it also stinks after you drive it for a little, much worse after a highway drive. smells like gear oil pretty bad. i took it to the dealer and had to argue with them about it. the mechanic told me i prob ran over an animal. after putting on the lift they determined that the transfer-case was making the noise. Mazda is replacing it with a new one once they get one in. has anybody had this problem before? what kind of fluid is used in the transfer-case? i would think that it would be the same that is in the transmission. 99.9% sure its not gear oil. but it definitely smells like it. that's why i am wondering if the transfer case is bad. i would think it would be one of the differentials, prob the front because it sounds like the noise is coming from the front. i hope its something else that way i get a new case for nothing.
