How's the MS3's Turbo cooled?

I know its Oil Cooled but, is it also Water Cooled?

My STi is both and its nice as you don't have to let it idle to cool down and then shut the motor off. Its nice to practice anyway specially after hard driving but, was just wondering.

Water-cooled. Can't source it for you without breaking the rules, but you can google "mazda 6 tech turbo water cooled" and get some very good info. Apparently OEM turboes are virtually all water-cooled these days. Manufacturers don't want to rely on people to idle their cars before shutdown to preserve reliability.

Is there any such thing as a non-oil cooled turbo? Come to a bloody screaching halt pretty quick, wouldn't it?

If you want to get technical about it, alot of new turbos are not oil cooled. Oil is used for lubrication, the water(coolant) does the cooling.

A turbo that is water cooled would have passages for the water, which I'm assuming comes from the engine cooling system. As per one of the posts above I'm going to agree that a turbo would just use oil for lubrication not cooling. If it is water cooled then it would be an ungraded design in my opinion.

Exactly. Some of the garrett BB turbos actually use a restrictor on the oil inlet to reduce the oil pressure(less pressure allows the turbo to spool faster), and the water handles the cooling.
