How to track down Airbag Light problem

For some reason, the airbag light stays on in my 2002 protege 5. Dealer took an initial look and said they couldn't find the problem. No codes stored. They thought it might be a relay. They also wanted me to authorize 4 hours of labor totalling $350 and still couldn't guarantee it would be fixed.

Can anyone suggest a course of action to try and hunt down the source? Areas to check? Behind the radio or A/C?

Somewhat related, I seem to have an issue with my headlights where one will go out, then come back on, then maybe the other one goes out. If I jiggle the wires behind the headlights, they will come back on or sometime not. This happens over a period of weeks.

I did install my headunit, but I am not a bafoon and worked professionally in car audio for 4 years. Sure, I am not an expert at calculating Q, etc, but I know the right and wrong way to install HUs.

just take out the light in the guage cluster for airbag and presto. no more light. ha

you got me, if the dealer cant diagnos the problem, then i am at a loss too.

What areas would you suggest checking? Like where are these pieces located?

does your p5 have side airbags? i know with my 03 lx. i did an interior swap to a p5 interior and the seats didnt have side airbags. so i had to leave the connectors underneath the seats unplugged and i took the light out in my cluster, to stop annoying me.lol


umm. if you are confident you could check the steering wheel and glove box airbags and the connectors to make sure everything is in order. where they are located its a little blurry to me. i want to say the glove box switch is behind the actual glovebox if you take it out.

there has to be some sort of how to on this related subject. search around and you should find your answer.

I guess i'll hunt around and check under the seat and behind the glove box. I have an extended warranty, but the dealer's being difficult. They want me to guarantee I'll pay the $350 if they find it was related to the stereo install. Not too unreasonable, but I just know they'll work on it for 2hrs, then bilk the rest of the 2hrs out of me for nothing. Can't wait to sell this. The Mazda dealer has been nothing but difficult. No loaners for major repairs, never at least wash my car, etc.
