How to tell Blown Turbo

well i cant speak for everyone else but I can def tell the difference between a spool up and a bad turbo...mazda tried to school me on the same thing, then i brough in my other turbos and schooled them....spool is a pleasant low whistle, the sound we're referring to is a high pitch make you wince squeal

theres a huge difference between a spool and this shreik. I dont have a problem distuinguishing the two. i was just sayin i had it 2 and i didnt know if it was bad or not. It doesnt do it every time on mine, but its frequent. hence why i mentioned i had it. if it was spool i would hear it the same every time.

had the exact same noise at the same rpm. My problem was the turbo wasn't getting oil. Replaced under warranty.

oh yes, this is not a normal turbo spooling sound at all. looks like the car goes back to the dealer as soon as I get it from the body shop. I love my MAZDASPEED!!

I dont!!!! I have a similar problem but my boost doesn't kick in when the car is first started, it has to be ran close to ten minutes before the turbo spools up.....i went to Z1 up in atlanta and they said it was probably due to a broken wastegate.....how many people had f'd up waste gates? I really am thinking about selling this car and buying a tt 300zx. Guys built my friend a 530 rwhp monster for only 16 thou....beat that....aint gonna happen.... convertible too

yea the first time i took it to the stealership they had to replace the oil line, but they said the turbo was fine even though it was makign the noise...took 3 times to finally convince them that the damage was already done and a new oil line couldnt fix damaged to the bearings already caused by oil starvation...im considering finding a head tap for higher oil pressure and using that as a feed line...

I have the high pitched squeel as well but have never thought anything of it. I'm kinda curious now if there is a problem. My car has been running great though after 50k km. If there was a problem with the turbo would I notice any performance issues or will it just break down all of a sudden without warning? Also I have no mods done yet.

super old thread, but...

anybody else have this issue? mines been doing this for 20,000mi. i don't beat the car up but i do boost.

was actually curious if i could replace the turbo with a regular t25 cause its outta warranty and i can't afford a ball bearing t25.

i would just need an oil feed line that can flow enough for a non-ball bearing turbo, right?

thanks

I recently started hearing this sound in my car as well. I had my car at the dealership about 3 weeks ago and even the tech said he thought it was bad. He told me to just bring it back and have it replaced under my warranty. I'm gonna be looking into it in the next couple days after seeing this thread. Can't believe I missed it when I was on here that long ago under my different username.

i hear what i would describe as a whistle, but not a screech or shriek.... i THINK its normal, i dunno. But at part throttle at around 4,000 rpms, i get a 'mooo'. I can't figure that one out either.

yeah, it is a blown turbo....a friend of mine also gets a weird sound, like if it was a aslipping belt...but it comes from the front of the car, and as soon as you step on the gas it goes away
he's also known to have CEL from not changing oil (?)
he told me he uses regular oil, the cheapest one and a thik one since they told him with 60k miles he can't use synthetic...

i'm at 64k miles and i still use mobil 1 full synthetic oil....i have a small leak at the turbo...but i guess that's normal since after all, the seals are made of rubber and not designed to last long..

sucks tho

change your turbo if it is still under warranty, otherwise rebuild it for about 200-500 dollars

When i by turbo blew at 19k, there was a long bog and no boost or whistling sound. mazda replaced and when i hit 4000 rpm, i get a loud shriek.. i just think it sound cool. i have 50k on the speed now and it still does it.

i got the tea kettle whistle too. im new to turbos so i thought it might have been the BOV since we are kinda getting off the throttle when it happens (usually hauling a$$ by the time it happens so need to slow down). im not too concerned, sounds like a lot of ppl have this so its either a recall (you would think) or normal wear and tear for some cars. not that anyone beats their car per say, but maybe just a bad batch of turbos? i dunno, but if a stock turbo does go out, how hard is it to just drop in a more powerful turbo, nothing crazy just a lil more? would i still have to swap out other parts or could it just be plug n play, lol?
