how to "kill switch"

This sounds pretty cool...Looks like another project to try. Pretty neat trick though.

Okay everyone, I've made a word doc detailing this process. Unfortunately, I can't attach it to this post. Therefore, e-mail me at eric(@)betterhomeservice.com and I will e-mail you the doc. Don't forget to take the parenthesees out. I put those in to reduce spam. :)

PS - If those with websites would like to post this in an HTML formatted doc you're welcome to if you just put my name in the "by line".

I was hoping to put an ignition kill switch in my Pro5 in the very near future.. I was looking at jcwhitney's stuff and they have an alarm add on module that uses your keyless entry to arm it, and includes an ignition kill switch.
The problem is that I have no idea how to wire the kill switch.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? If it worked like it should, it sounds like a GREAT deal to me for 40 bucks.

I have something similar to the push button idea, I have a hidden keypad mounted, every time I get in the car I enter my code, every time I open the door while the car is running I have to punch in my code also (carjacking protection) If I don't punch in the code, the first time I hit the brakes my alarm gives one last warning to punch in the code, then the whole car shuts down (starter and ignition kill) It just seems like a good idea everyone should do (and if they figure out that part of my alarm they have the lojack to deal with.........after my bike got stolen I'm not taking any chances with my mp3)

that seems a lil annoying to have to enter your code like 4 times b4 u can drive it.

I would like to dredge this thread back up. Any more info on the install?

I plan to eventually get an MSP lip, and would like to wire my now useless fog light to act as a kill switch. Not much, but it will help.

Got an idea, but don't know ANY details on 'how to...' When the Gas pedal is held full down, before cranking the motor, it kills the spark. You'll crank forever, but it won't start until you lift your foot off from full throttle.(Don't test this without QUICKLY lifting, or you get an abusive zoom start) So, is there a switch somewhere on the throttle body that could be tapped into or easily activated? Just thought of this, at 12:40 at night, and I ain't gonna go underhood crawling in the dark. Anybody? Is this a viable option, or am I dead wrong?

Here's a questions for you guys. The JC Whitney thing that is a few posts up... for it to work with your keyless entry, is it hard wired into the keyless entry "box" in order for it to recognize your keyless entry code? I'm kind of interested in purchasing that but have no clue how it could recognize my code and not anyone elses. Any help?

Could you just tap the terminal 85 wire into the cigarette lighter power wire by exposing some of the wire, wrapping terminal 85 wire around it and taping?

Yes, using the lighter to make the "kill switch" will make the lighter no longer operational in it's normal capacity. Like I said though, there are other way to make it work, everything would hook up the same except for terminal 85. You can make it so you have to hold down the door lock button, or the turn signal lever, etc.. If your interested in using the door lock button, you would be looking for a light green with red wire at the door lock module which is located high in the driver's kick panel area to the driver's side of the brake pedal. There are lot's of options, you could even mount a little tiny push button under the shifter boot. and just press it through the material while turning the key. They also sell pressure switches that can be mounted under the carpet right next to the hatch lever, etc... You get the idea. :D

HA! nevermind....this would make the starter constantly fire, wouldn't it? at least until your car broke.

EDIT: Where can I see pics of said relay on the internet, I want to understand what I am reading.

Kill Switch

Hey everyone. I've been wanting to install a kill switch for 2 years now. Finally have something to go on. Thanks. One question. I had an aftermarket remote starter/alarm installed a year ago. Will I be tampering with this wiring at all?

It does not rely on an alarm or keyless entry for it to work, only a simple momentary contact switch (normally open) to deactivate it. Every time the ignition is turned off, continuity is broken on the starter feed wire. To disable (or start), turn ignition on, then press the hidden switch, then start as normal.

You can substitute the switch with a number of others devices such as the amp turn on lead of your head unit. Be sure to isolate it with at least a 1 amp diode. Turn the key to the run position. Allow the head unit to come on or turn it on. Now start the vehicle. If you connected to the power antenna lead, make sure the tuner is on. If you have a pullout or detachable face head unit, your vehicle will not start without it.

If you wish to use a device such as your horn, but do not want the horn to sound when you deactivate the starter kill, yet still work when driving, you can use the same configuration above on both the horn and the starter lead as shown below. The starter kill is deactivated by the positive output of the vehicle's horn relay and the horn's interrupt is deactivated by the positive output of the starter lead from the key. You could substitute the horn with other devices such as parking lights, brake lights, etc. where you do not want it to be obvious that you used the device to disable the starter kill.

The easiest way to do this is to put a switch on the fuse going to the fuel pump. Check the current rating, and get a switch and wiring capable of handling it (15 amp isn't that hard to wire correctly) and there you go.

Done, simple.

Firsts things firsts, I would invest in the Mazda Protege Service Manual. It's about 400 pages long, and about 50-75$ but it will tell you exact wires positions, polarity, full electrical diagrams, and everything else you could ever hope for.

From there the next stop would be to decide exactly what kind of kill switch you want. I have known people that used to Window defroster button as their kill switch to shut off the fuel pump. I have also had friends that used a switch hidden somewhere in the car to interupt the starter lead.

Of course any sort of starter kill you do you are going to want to use a relay so you arent trying to run heavy gauge wire through some tiny trigger switch. The relay will let you run whatever gauge wire as a trigger, while it acts as like a remote switch for the heavy gauge wire.

Whatever you come up with please post back about it, I am interested to see how it turns out.

"Alternative security" has been a HUGE issue here in NJ among WRX owners. I'll share a couple of things we've figured out. A kill switch is a great, cheap addition to any security system. Just make sure you use a good quality switch or relay. You don't want this switch controlling power to the fuel pump failing at 60 mph. Personally, I have a magnet controlled relay hidden in the dash and with a single swipe of the keychain, the kill is armed or disarmed. If you're not watching really closely, you'd never know I was doing anything. I went with this type of relay because alot of WRXs were being watched by the thieves that were taking them. If they saw you digging around under the dash, they'll have a pretty good idea of where to start looking when the car doesn't start.

I do not consider an already existing button on the dashboard a good place for your kill. At least in NJ, thieves are pretty smart. The first thing they'll do when the car dies or doesnt start is start pressing all the buttons on the dash. Last, but not least, even if they can't find the kill switch, they still might take your ride. Read this. Make sure you make it down at least to Post #7.
