How to Keep Adaptive Cruise Control Off?

I live in New Jersey. It's the most densely populated state in America. Because of the density, it's also the most densely traveled roads in America. In NJ if you leave 2 car lengths between your car and the car in front of you, there are 3 cars trying to get into that space. As a result, I absolutely hate adaptive cruise control (ACC).

I just bought a CX-50 S Premium and absolutely love it 99%. The 1% I don't like is the ACC defaulting to "ON" whenever I start the car. Mazdas247 never let me down in the past, so I'm putting out this request.

Does anyone know how to stop the CX-50 from defaulting to ON whenever I start my car?

Not really.
But ar least to change keep pressing the Cruise control button it should shift to the basic one. There was an article somewhere.
 
Thank you but I wish to have it OFF permanently. In NJ it's so crowded that I want to avoid the distraction of constantly pushing and dialing 4 or 5 buttons. Besides it being unsafe it's totally useless. I first tried it while traveling North on the Garden State Parkway. I set it on 65 and as soon as I approached the car in front of me it slowed me down and maintained a 2 vehicle space from the car I was following, whereupon a car immediately jumped into the available space. It slowed again and before I knew it I was cruising at 40 M.P.H. I absolutely hate this thing and want it to go away permanently. Thanks for trying.

65mph and a distance between you and the car in front of you of two car lengths?
That is about 30ft. It's the minimal safe distance between cars at that speed.
But if you ask me not a really safe one.
 
Doesnt work in most US congested highways. Same where I am. If I leave 2 car lengths there would be multiple cars try to squeeze in. Then ACC brakes and slows me down the car behind gets annoyed and tries to go over me :)
I stopped using the ACC most of the time. It is useful on some large distance trips.
 
Well I was taught to keep 2 seconds between me and the car in front of me...
This system is based on distance, not time, so is not consistent with drivers' education.
But it can be overridden with you right foot at any time, right?

The system calculates the distance to the car in front of you based on the speed of the car and the distance you have set with the selector on the steering wheel.

I did a small calculation:
65mph = 95ft/s, two seconds is 190ft.
The CX-50 is about 15.5ft, therefore a 2 second space between you and the car in front of you with 65mph is more than 12 car lengths...

Please correct me if my calculation is wrong.

Yes, you can. But as soon as you lift your right foot, the car will brake.
Therefore, lift your foot slowly ;-)
