I noticed the Kartboy website doesn't have a how-to on installing their exhaust hangers like they do their shifter bushings. So, I decided to make one myself!
There are a few optional things to make the removal of the stock exhaust hangers and installation of the kartboy exhaust hangers easier, I made notes at the end for some tips that I read about on the forums.
And also, like any how-to, the author of this how-to (moi) is not responsible for any damage you do to your car. This is how I did my install. You choose to do yours any way you want. Hopefully this will help though.
You will need:
1 set of Kartboy exhaust hangers (duh) - 2x10mm and 2x12mm hangers
Jack and jackstands
Utility Knife
Zipties
Lithium Grease (I bought a spray can of it for a few bucks at Autozone because it was cheaper and easier to use than buying a huge tub of it)
OK. On with the installation!
Step 1: Jack up the rear of the car using the jackstands. We're going to do the rear 12mm hangers first.
Step 2: Locate the 2 rear exhaust hangers. They should be hanging off the muffler. These will be replaced by the 12mm kartboy exhaust hangers.
Step 3: Remove the 1st exhaust hanger and replace with a 12mm kartboy hanger. The first one you should be able to pull off without too much trouble. It's located on the passenger side of the muffler, just behind the rear fender.
Once you have it off, use the lithium grease to grease up the inside of the a 12mm kartboy exhaust hanger. This will prevent any potential squeaking from the hangers as well as help with sliding the new hangers onto the exhaust mounths.
Here is a comparison of the stock rubber hanger vs. the kartboy urethane hanger:
This picture shows how malleable the stock hanger is. No good.
Push the kartboy exhaust hanger onto the mounts and voila. You're 25% of the way done!
Step 4: Replace the 2nd rear exhaust hanger. This one is a little trickier. As you can see in the picture above, it's located on the driver's side of the muffler, and is a little less easy to reach. Also, the mounts that it holds point in different directions.
After trying to pull it off one way and then another, I used the utility knife to cut through the stock rubber exhaust hanger. I don't think I'll be using the stock hangers anymore, so no biggie that I cut mine up.
Once you have the 2nd rear exhaust hanger off, grease up the 2nd 12mm hanger and work it onto the mounts. Give it some elbow grease...they're a snug fit, but that's good. Wipe off any extra grease from the hangers before continuing.
Step 5: Secure exhaust hangers in place with zipties.
The kartboy exhaust hangers are great for reducing the amount of up/down travel of the exhaust, but it doesn't do much for reducing the side-to-side movement. Here is where the zipties come in.
Make sure the exhaust is positioned correctly in the exhaust cutout of the rear bumper. When you've maneuvered it into a good position, use a few of the zip ties on each side of the newly installed kartboy exhaust hangers to secure the hangers in place on the mounts. Here's a picture of one of the first hanger. The 2nd one is roughly the same.
Cut the extra ziptie strap when it's all secured. This will keep your exhaust in place and increase the effectiveness of the stiffer exhaust hangers. Ok onto the front hangers!
Step 6: Lower the rear end of the car, jack up the front end of the car, and place the jackstands accordingly. Look just behind the front wheels in the middle of the car and you'll see the two front exhaust hangers. In this picture there is one on this side and one on the far side of the cat.
Step 7: Remove the stock front exhaust hangers and replace with the 10mm kartboy exhaust hangers.
Pretty must the same as the rears from here on out. I ended up cutting these ones off with my utility knife as well. It's much easier and takes a lot less time and energy than wrestling underneath the car trying to get some dirty stock hangers off the exhaust mounts! Remember to grease up the 10mm holes in the new hangers. After both are installed it should look like this:
I didn't find it necessary to ziptie these hangers in place, as they won't travel side-to-side like the rear hangers do. Be sure to wipe off any extra grease before you lower the car back down to the ground.
