i searcvhed but couldnt find any topic on this.. thanks

If I recall correctly (I have a manual so I'm not 100% sure) the threading and shaft size on the tiptronic shifter is the exact same as the Protege MP3, so any shift knob that fits the MP3 will fit your shift lever. That being said, very few shift knobs are threaded for the MP3 shifter so one that screws right on will be tough to find.

I think the size is M8x1.5, again I'm not sure though.

But yes, any of the "universal" knobs with set screws and all that crap should fit on. I've just never had good luck with the "universal"-type knobs, they always seem to come loose on cars I've driven with them.

but arent the tiptronic knobs just twistable? dont they just screw on without screws?

you are 100% correct. I took mine off a few weeks ago. It easily screws off just like an odd shaped nut.

yeah, the shift rod is threaded so the tiptronic knob just screws on. I think the knob you have already on your tiptronic lever is the same knob the MP3 came with.. the black and silver leather knob?

It's just really hard to find aftermarket knobs that are threaded to twist right on to that lever, so you have to deal with the "universal" knobs with their set screws and such.

not only is it hard to find knobs that just twist on, but finding one long enough that it doesnt look out of place is even harder. the rods our shift knobs are on (i have a triptronic too) is very long and only threaded for a short distance on the end. but if you find one that fits, let me know. ive been wanting one for a while.

what about a replacement shift knob for a non tiptronic? i hate the humongus shifter in my car.

i would think a manual knob would be easier to change, but i wouldnt know. i can solve your problem tho. trade me transmissions.

If you dont cut the stick your going to have about 2and a half inches of rod between your shifter and your knob, making your shifter look like a lolly pop.

haha, easier said than done

oh i thought you had a 5 spd. you mean you actually have the transmission where you have to press the uber cool "chrome" button to shift into gear? i didnt even realize they had those on the p5s.

yep i have the UBER cool chrome button........i hate it. and my autotragic is slipping 3rd. i wonder how much longer my tranny will last. hopefully when it blows, the cost of rebuilding/replacing the auto is the same as swapping to a 5 speed, cuz if it is. i will have a 5 speed.

i would imagine the only things youd have to pay extra for is a clutch, boot, pedal, and maybe some wiring and crap. and labor of course unless you plan on doing it yourself. im thinking of finding a p5 in a juckyard, grabbing the tranny out of it, and experimenting a little.

for those of you who are curious

there are some people asking how i mounted this shifter and i will tell you it was easy just unscrew the stock shifter first then take a 4.5" grinder with a cut off wheel and cut the factory shaft to the length that you need it mount the knob it was that easy

I just put a Razo WR112 I think is the model number. It's a dark chrome ball. It looks nice with the chrome shaft. And it uses these plastic inserts so it will fit pretty much any threaded shifter. I put in the 8mm one and it threads the plastic as you screw it on. So far it's been very stable and it makes using the manual mode MUCH better.
