How to add 20 - 30 HP to a 1.6 L

2001 Mazda Protege ES
Most of the knowledge I come across for this engine relates to adding a turbo. I would rather add an exhaust/headers/throttle body.
I am looking for some less involved to simply increase driveability, and increase the engines output to say 130 H.P. It would be great to hear what others have done so I can have an idea where to start.

You will never do it with bolt-ons. That said, I/H/E will give it a little bump, just not as much as you are looking for.
 
I've been toying with the idea of nitrous since 1.6L internals are stronger but you'd still need to be real careful with it.
 
u can get alot....with a weapon r intake wraped in titanium heat wrap....then get a obx 4-1 header an wrap it as well...then get a good exhaust perfer corksport....and then if u want more take off ur belts to ur ac compressor and power steering....and take out back seats thats all...thats what i did and damn it felt like it was boosted haha...

One of my friend put some nitrous on his !,6l and the clutch didn't liked it lol good ideas pepdamazda BTW!
 
I'm planning on upgrading my clutch anyway so that shouldn't break on me.
 
Well I hope this helps but...

Doing I/H/E + tuning and misc mods i got from 84.5 to 101.43 whp. (with ac on)
Am pretty sure 30 hp off the engine is possible if i went a little further and changed the exhaust cam, bore and stroke, among other things.
The engine now should be outputting around 120 hp.

One thing I notice is with current stage 1 mods the radiator went a little high above the half mark..
A little problematic but a swap to the fs-ze radiator solves things quick.

For what cam would you change the exhaust cam? Why not a Corksport Rad.?
 
Where are you getting youre ZL-VE parts? I live in Canda and I'm desperatly searching for a engine head of a ZL-VE but all theJDM guys are only importing motor no part alone...

I get them direct from Japan by ship through my stockists here brand new, who in turn places an order with mazda motor co. Could take up to 6 months to arrive. Based on pricewise for you would be better to just get the motor, grab the parts and store the rest for giggles ^_^

@malaki Ace has a good point. Unless you have a contact overseas willing to help you out you're probably better off importing the whole motor, removing what you need and then trying to sell the rest. You could contact Corksport and see if they have any of the jspec parts you need or perhaps they can import what you need at a lower cost. No harm in asking.

It,s already done :S Thay have the hole motor and harmess but I don't see the point of buying the hole motor I will have 3 motor for my car lol The only thing I need is the head, I don't eaven need de ECU or harness, I'll buy the chip to run it with my Megasquirt V2... Anyways thank's youre help guy's it's appreciated ;)
