how streetable would this be?

my plan is to have my motor built by this time next year...so far all i REALLY have is a full exhaust (not cats), clutch/flywheel and intake. i bought a mp3 intake mani so i won't have to pull mine to have work done to it. i plan on getting a spare head and get cams made, valves, springs, yadda yadda yadda. the block will have 12.1:1 pistons and forged rods. i'm still uncertain about engine management. there isn't anywhere local for me to have this tuned...so that'll be the hard part (that and saving up for parts). i MAY buy a built block from MAM...that way i can bolt up the head and ride. my question is how streetable would this be? i've read that from our 9.1:1 pistons to 12.1:1 would gain 40hp properly tuned...is that accurate? after i get the head work done and buy the block, i'd like to get a baffled oil pan...just in case. i don't want to risk failure due to oil starvation.

HOPEFULLY i'll be getting a job at the same company my wife works at so i can park one of the cars for all this to be done...and to save money on gas (more money for parts!)...i haven't decided which car i want to do this on...i prefer the mp3...simply because i'd get rid of the p5 before i sold that, but who knows. any opinions, comments, help would be greatly appreciated. is there anything else i would need to do?

lol...thanks! it all depends on whether or not the wife will let me have the mp3...she won't need all that power...it'll be a few months before i actually get started. i have to replace my throw-out bearing on the p5 (thanks to the tech that left my stock bearing in when he put in my clutch/flywheel) and replace a shift-fork in the mp3 (thanks to the previous owner)...so once all that gets taken care of, the work will begin...luckily, i have a good family that'll give me car parts for birthdays/christmas...hell, i'm getting the mp3 intake mani for father's day!
 
it'll be as streetable as you want it.

mine is perfectly streetable at the moment and once i have the ecy it'll be even better
 
it will be somewhat streetable, if you dont mind your powerband starting around 4500 or so, you would need to be able to rev around 7500 or more given that you get a fairly hot cam, you are going to NEED to port the manifold alot, and a good port on the head will also be needed
with a hot cam it will probably have a CEL at idle and idle like s***, this can be corrected with some type of fuel management, you will probably also want to pull some timing just to be safe.

i know this will sound dumb but how do you destroke? Use shrter rods? Customize the crank so the pistons move shorter distances? Sorry for noobness....
 
destroke means making the crank smaller. so instead of the 92mm we have, reduce that to like 85mm etc (ie 1.8L engnie)

another option i have been thinking about is doing an engine transplant. the mazda FE3 - 2L 4cyl, 86mm bore, 86mm stroke, 1.74 or something rod ratio and capable of 10000rpm rev limit without any issues and all using stock internals. damn wish mazda had this engine in the protege5 et al!!!

12 - 1 on the street is quite high. You better not get a bad batch of gas when you fill up either.

Also, that is a lot of money to drop on a combo that won't make it to 200 whp. The engines take a while, and I am sure that the 12-1 pistons would take longer for CP to produce than the 8.5-1 which is much more popular (but not really popular being a Progege).

If this were a Honda board I would be all for it (better engines than ours), but you can get a much better Protege street car with a turbo on the stock engine or a turbo on a built short block (without all the pulleys, cams, porting, etc) for less or not much more money than these crazy NA combos that you have to run to get the power.

Just think before you plop such an agressive combo into your daily driver.
 
i'd rather stay n/a...i like f/i...but i want to be different...there are only a few n/a guys out there...i just want to see what i can do with it. it costs a lot of money to run f/i as well...and to run it correctly is even more $$. sure, you can buy a kit for 3-4K, bolt it up and drive...but you can't boost that high. what's the point of having a turbo kit that you can only boost 7psi on? sure, you're getting 200whp...but you're not taking full advantage of the turbo. i want to try to take full advantage of the motor alone...and be streetable...so there's going to be a lot of give-and-take there.
 
Yeah, but you are spending a bunch of money on a car that won't break the 15s. You will have a car that is much more fun on 7 lbs of boost than an 11:1 engine.

A Protege is a different car anyway. I don't see many out there as it is, much less ones that have turbos. So, a turbo P3 or 5 is quite different.

Go turbo, you won't regret it.

nobody has done 12:1 pistons with engine management and custom cams

the tri-point proteges made somewhere around 230hp NA, it can be done
