i have 1600 now.

i took my car into mazda this morning to have a few minor warranty things taken care of.

they gave me a free oil change for buying the car and i'm moving from KS to FL in 2 weeks so i wanted to get it done now. also, i've heard you shouldn't want until 3k miles to get your first oil change.

well, the service guy and i got into a bit of a arguement because he refused to change my oil with only 1600 miles.

i won't go into more ranting details unless anyone wants to actually hear blow by blow how it went down.

needless to say, i left there prettttty pissed. :D (rant)

i changed it around 1200 after I thought it was thoroughly broken in, then again at 3000. actually had it done at the mazda dealer

my dealer actually said the oil is special, and is used for break in. he said you need a full 3000 miles on the "special" oil to get a proper break in. i smell BS. i am at 800, and will probably DIY the oil dump at around 1000.

I did mine at 1400 miles. I all depends on the way you drive and that is why the say 3000 miles because by then you should have done a good bit of varried driving.

They do this with some aircraft engines, Cessnas for example they use mineral oil for proper break-in.

I'm changing mine around 1500

Oil is like old time carny cures LOL...

everyone has heard a story about this or that. Thing is, with oil it's almost impossible to prove or disprove any rumors. Unless of course your a petro chemical engineer.

seriously, changing the oil @ 800, 1000, 3000, or even 5000 will likely make no difference at all.

I changed mine at 4200. It was pretty dark and nasty. I used conventional for my first oil change, because I figured there's still some break in left to happen. I'll take it to 8k or so and then it'll be full synthetic from then on.

I'm considering doing mine at 1K, again at 3K, then every 5K after that. Switch to synthetic at the one after that. None will be at the dealer, though. Too far to drive, and I can't spend half a day on a thirty minute oil change.

God this is why I hate dealerships. MAZDA DOES NOT USE BREAK IN OIL. Hondas use break-in oil and it specifically states in the manual that it does. No wear in the mazda manual does it state this. There have been many threads on when is best to do the first change. I waited until about 2800 then put in some pennzoil platinum 5w-30. I will always be doing my own oil changes and I recommend everyone else to do them to.

1,3,5k then Royal Purple about every 4000. Changed to Redline tranny at 18000. All good so far. I also got mixed messages from Mazda. I still do it the old guy way.

The manual wants you to go 3K to 5K between oil changes. Early oil changes are not good. Being a mechanic for years I cant disprove anything other than you want your seals and rings to seat well. Fresh oil takes braking in, hence a bad mileage tank right after an oil change. I drive my 3 pretty average/aggressive and change my own oil every 5k. Rolling close to 15 so this will be my 3rd oil change coming up.

I got 3 free oil changes from my dealer, the service writer (and board member) suggested going at 1, 2 and 3k then switching to synthetic at 3k. that's what I plan on doing. at 930 miles today, getting it changed tomorrow AM.

The manual says 7,500 between changes. That seems very excessive to me. Early oil changes used to be required during break-in. I've never had my mileage drop after an oil change. Yes, rings, pistons, bearings, cams, etc., need to seat; hence the recommendation to used dino-oil for the first few thousand before switching to synthetics. Never heard of the need to "break in" new oil. I did read a post on another forum of a guy who rebuilds engines and doesn't believe in filling a new filter before putting on the engine! Clean, "unfiltered oil is bad for the main bearings". (shrug)
