How long do orders take?

My strongly preferred way of buying a new car is to order the model and color that I want, then get the car fresh off the truck, without its having been used as a demonstrator. I asked one of the local Mazda dealers recently how long it would take to get a Mazda 3sT that way, and he said two to three months. It has never taken me more than a month before, even with cars assembled in Japan. Is the dealer being honest--or just trying to get me to put in an order sooner rather than later? Does anyone have experience to share?

It depends on what's on the boat or what the dealer has ordered for stock. If you want a not popular combination then it could take a while to get it. Unless you want your name on the window sticker, then it'll take that long.

I want a hatchback Soul Red 3s T. Seems (to me, at least) like it should be a popular combination.

The three last BMWs I ordered took over 8 weeks. Takes time to order, build, ship, delivery, prep, etc.

No sure about yours, but many BMWs that are not bought off a dealer's lot are built to order because there are so many different packages and options. So, naturally, that takes a while from start to finish. I don't believe that Mazda does orders like that, at least not with the 3. It's mainly a question of getting the right model and color sent to the ordering dealer from the stock that arrives at whatever port serves the area. When I ordered my '12 Civic, the dealer was able to swap out a Civic that had been designated for him, so that another dealer got the Civic that was supposed to go to my guy, and he got the one I wanted. The whole thing took about two weeks from order to delivery.

You're right. I actually worked for the BMW dealer. My cars were all custom orders.

With the Mazda having limited colors and options, it's very possible to find one on another lot or one that is in transit without much wait.

When I was going through the process of signing for mine in early October, I was told it wasn't scheduled to be built until November, and that it would probably be at least a month before I saw it. I ended up with one from Waterloo with 124km on it. Not sure if they just drove it from Waterloo to London or if they used it as a demo, but I'd say the 2-3 months could be accurate.

However, they also said it may be possible to trade my order for one that was already on the boat to Vancouver, destined for some other dealership. Basically, if it was just being sent as a demo/dealer stock, and not spoken for, they could get it. Even then, I was still 2-3 weeks before I got mine, and it was already in Ontario.

Mazda3 does not have many optional packages. Not the case for BMWs.
I ordered my last BMW as well. It took more than 2 months to arrive.
I easily found the Mazda3 I wanted w/o trying hard.
Unless what you want is a rare combo or insist on very low miles (<10), I think you should not need to order one.

Or if you want a 3TE package.. Since they are just not going into production might as well order one to get what you want on it. If you don't want the 3TE package with the Adaptive Cruise Control you better find a 2TE package quick as they will all be gone soon I think.

I ordered a Mazda 3 about a month ago.. just hoping it comes in by Christmas. That would be about 2.5 months.

I ordered a white GS sport 6speed manual with convenience package and moonroof package the first week of October because according to the sales manager there were none available in the province. I just heard back this week that my car is not in production yet, and it will be at least two more months.

AFAIK, factories produce vehicle by batch of the same color. i.e. if they produce red ones, it will continue for a few days, then switch color.
It makes sense of course to be more efficient.
Hence, depending on the color and the time you order, the delay might vary by 1-2 weeks.
