How long did your stock break pads last?

I have 48,000 miles on mine and they are still going. Is that longer than normal? It's a manual tranny.

How bout you?

Changed mine for the first time at 62000 miles...I just finished doin them again this morning at 97000 miles, I've put cheap ones last time. Just remember to grease the sliders and clean up your breaks after 25000 miles or you're going to end up with problems...maybe wait longer if you don't have a f**ing winter like us here in Montreal...

I had about 55-60k when I did mine. I bought some brembo cross drilled/slotted rotors for the upgrade and OEM pads in the back and Raven performance for the front. The back OEM's where still good with about 1/3 life left but I changed them anyways. I now have 104k on mine and the performance is great! It even saved my ass one day coming home from work.. i swear i was about 2 inchs from T-boning this car. If it wasn't for my breaks and my nice Kumho's It would be in the body shop for sure.

I have 48K on my P5 5-speed and they will need to be replace soon; probably right at 50K. I would consider my self moderate on the brakes. Not easy for sure, but not quite hard on them either since I've never heated them to the point of fading and certainly never to the point where the pads were smoking. I'm going to replace them with Brembo blanks and Hawk HPS pads so I'll definitely leave open the possibility of abuse in the future.

A note about pad wear: its not only about your driving habits (i.e. do you stop hard, do you autocross) but also the type of driving you do. In my last car I got very good service from the brakes when I did mostly suburban stop-and-go driving. When I moved further out into the boonies I traveled on a 6-lane highway that had traffic lights. You could easily get to 70mph between lights and I often caught every light at rush hour (it seemed). I did a ton of 70-0 stops and immediatly began to notice a greater amount of brake dust, tire wear, and even some caliper warping.

The moral of the story: don't worry about pad wear and change them when they need it.

mine start gettin bad at about 35k but i hit them hard sometimes when im not paying attention.. i almost hit some bikes and i had to hit them so hard smoke was coming from them for about 30 sec all around me car

Just replaced all four of mine at 36,000 miles. The rears had a few thousand in them, but the price was right.

This is why I exclude pads and rotors from the things people should report in my reliability research. Too much variation because of driving style and driving conditions.

I don't feel like I'm on my brakes much, but apparently I'm on them more than most of you. Brake light's been on since last winter.

I'd say brakes are one of the easyer upgrades for the protege. Not to mention cost. You can do all four disk and pads (leave OEM in back) and upgrade the front to whatever you like for under 500 bucks. Its well worth it and you notice a BIG difference.

Cool. Thanks for the replies. What's the real benefit of having cross drilled and vented rotors for just a daily - get me to work and back quickly and with style - driver??

I can't really say that there is a huge benifit if all you realy need is just something to get you to and from. It will help if your already maxing out your current set up and driving it hard but just to get you to and from it may not be needed. Though it does look good to see the rotors.

Well.. honestly.. from what I understand the main purpose is they do not heat up as quick thus preventing them from locking up and warping. If you mash on them hard of couse they are going to lock up. But if you come to a quick stop because of bumper to bumper traffic they wont lock up or warp as easy as OEM brakes.

And they look sweet with aftermarket rims. The really stand out and give them an aggressive look. I think you get the most gain if you buy a BIG disc brake kit.. but who has 1k to spend on front brakes unless you need some serious stopping power... s*** my car can stop 100-0 faster then it can get from 0-100 haha

Mine only lasted 5k..................b4 being set aside for Brembo c/s Hawk hps combo. Those have lasted over 50k so far with about 1/4 pad left.

ya they definatly last longer then OEM and perform better.. My brakes are never going back to OEM!
