is going 60 for 4 hrs straight ==abuse? (riught off the lot)

Yes...you need to change your speed a lot during the break-in period.

The best thing to do IMO would be to take all the back roads home. Yeah, it will take longer, but the car will thank you, and you may find some nice twisties :)

Another note. A good break in technique is...while you are cruising on the highway. Engage and Dis-engage the clutch. That helps break it in!

The first time I took mine to the track it had 36miles on it,
Break it in like your going to drive it,
All new cars have had break in procedures already done at the factory......Of course you can read the manual too.

You don't need to worry about it. Modern engines don't need to be "broken in."

shrug, im not saying you are this sorta person, but alot of people that say this sorta thing have problems/complain of random noises. =)

You should probably get the car up to 115mph then drop to 45 atleast a dozen times. It will be fun, plus you will piss a lot of people off when you pass them one second then they pass you the next(drive)

Joking! :D

As long as the engine is up to temperature, you can drive anyway you like. As a matter of fact, drive it hard a little bit according to engine builders. But make sure to change the oil after your drive.

hey if you take 81 down going 60 mph would suck you would get passed by people going 30 mph faster. Just go with the traffic in the right or left lane the speed is always varying never really constant.

On a side note, i am applying to tech for next year and was wondering how many speeds are there? I know of one and possibly the second.

:wtf: .....Change your oil according to the manual.....5/5000 or 3/3000 depending on your driving habits.

Guys you need to read the owners manual. There is a break in period. Do what it says in the manual.

No special break in period is nessary but a few precautions in the first 600 miles may add to the performance, economy, and life of your Mazda.

Don't race the engine.
Don't maintain one constant speed for long.
Don't drive constantly at full-throttle or high engine RPM for extended periods of time.
Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
Avoid full throttle starts.

This is what the book says.

I have had Mazda's for a long time. If you follow the break-in instructions on page 4-6 of the owner's manual, the car will be fine. These amount to don't drive a constant speed, don't race the engine, don't drive constantly at full throttle or high engine speeds for extend periods, avoid hard starts, and avoid unnecessary hard stops for the first 600 miles. When you are breaking it in, you should pay close attention to the fluid levels.

Drive it the way you drive normally. I'm a firm believer that if it's put together correctly it will stay together, if not, its a free motor from Mazda! I got one from chevy, back in the day. For the people who will flame me, I've built 750 -800 horse V-8's from scratch and they did just fine in our race cars.

He'll be fine. Just have fun with it. The drive down I-81 will give you more than enough time to vary the speed. I used to trail behind semi's going 90. There are also some nice inclines to knock it back in 4th and really get on it. The 60MPH thing is a rumor. There is really nothing special you need to do during the "break-in" period. Just keep it out of redline. Enjoy your new car!!! :)

How fast?

From the factory before the flash, ~133mph. Haven't done a top speed run since then.

Anybody else reach top speed yet?

Just follow the book. Some motors need thrashing to break in properly, some need gentle care, some... need nothing at all.
