How Do You Order MP3 Head Unit

I thought I was getting the MP3 head unit in my '07 MSM6, but its the standard 6-CD changer head (just spits out MP3 disks). (pissed) But I can't find a reference to the MP3 unit anywhere except in the User Manual that came in my car.

What's the story here? Did anyone get this head unit? How do you order it?

do you have BOSE audio in the car? the part number is GP9A-79-EGX. dealer price is over $500, we carry it for $425.

The fact that the MS6 doesn't come with MP3 capabilities is a complete rip-off. This is practically standard equipment in cars these days and the MS6 GT is on the luxury end of the scale when it comes to features...or so I thought. No RDS is also a let down.

For $500 you could buy a new iPod and the iPod adapter. I guess that's what I'll be doing once I get tired of my CDs.

I suggest you do 1 test before forking over 500$. I had read multiple posts here regarding the fact stock 6 radio's dont play mp3's. I dont have the bose system.. but it may be the same case for both.

Check to make sure your CD's arent burnt as data. Some programs that you use to make the disc burn the cd as data in order to fit more songs, or to allow you to burn MORE onto the disc once your finished.

The data disc DID NOT WORK in my cd player.. but once i put in a properly burnt mp3 cd.. it worked perfectly.

I believe the format needed is mp3/wav/mpeg ( jpeg? ) format. Test this first... might just save you tons of cash and alot of headaches.

Numerous people have tried it with the US spec Mazdaspeed6...and if it doesn't say "MP3" on the face...it ain't an MP3 player.

Furthermore, if you choose to burn an "audio" disc with just about any software, it will convert your mp3s to WAV and limit you to about 70 minutes of play time. This is not mp3 playback...it is regular old CD playback.

Perhaps there is an additional burn option that I am not aware of that you are speaking about but I'm pretty sure the consensus is that if your radio doesn't say MP3 on the face somewhere, it isn't going to play any MP3 cds.

So does yours say "MP3" on the face?

mp3 is a DATA disc. your software just converted it for you and burned .wav.
you dont have an mp3 player

Personally, I decided it was better to pick up a VW PhatBox off of Ebay for around $200, change the firmware to Mazda (available on PhatHack.com), and get the genuine Mazda Phatbox installation kit for $70. Now I have 20 gigs that I can control via the CD changer, and it's a removable HD, so I can just run it up to my compter, pop it in a cradle, and move whatever songs I want.

Hmm, now that's a neat idea...except its only slightly cheaper than getting a new 30gig iPod and an adapter. The iPod you can take with you but the Phatbox will benefit from faster transfer speeds I'll bet.

I thought about that, but I don't think I'd really use an iPod. The furthest I ever walk is from the house to the car, car to the office, office to the car, car to the house... not enough time to use it :)

I'm not sure how the iPod controls work, but the nice thing about the Phatbox is that the Mazda factory head unit sees it as a CD changer, so you can control everything directly. Everything is stealth... no iPods sitting on the dash, no wires going into the cigarette lighter, etc.

Another option exists if you have a Carputer. I'm currently beta testing the Car2PC adaptor, which again plugs into the head unit's external CD changer port on one end, plugs into your carputer's USB port and audio output on the other end, and has drivers so you control WinAmp directly from your factory headunit. Kinda cool if you already have a setup... and just a couple bugs left to work out.

Oh...

The other cool thing about the Phatbox is that it has synthesized album and artist announcing. When you change albums, it uses Microsoft Text to Speach to tell you the current album, playlist, etc.

It's always hillarious to hear this synthesized voice announcing some of the heavy metal albums I listen to :)

I do have a nice Samsung MP3 player. Is it possible to just simply plug it through a line in? I can change songs with the mp3 player no need to use the radio.
