how do i tell if i have a coolant leak?

I don't know really, but what I've learned is to take off the rad cap(when cold, not hot, unless you want to be burnt). And then start the car, If it starts to bubble, like air bubbles, then you have a leak, then look under the car for any drippage, If there is some, look to where it's dripping from, then look up to where it's originataing from. It helps to generalize the area of the leak, then focus on that area, and look for any signs of a leak, Like buitl up white grungy s***. You may not have a leak, but it might just get so hot that the coolant vents out of the over flow canister, or it might burn off. I don't know how acurate this is, but the leak test is reasonably solid, I've used it in past cars, and in Auto shop often enough to know it helps.

If you spend as much time looking for the leak as you did looking for an existing thread with all the answers you need, you'll never find it.

SEARCH next time!

Here's is the thread that a simple search on "coolant leak" turns up -- it's all you need.

Dude, the guy has 33 posts. I'm all for pointing out search, but don't scare the poor guy away. There are only so many MSP owners on earth!

Well JFC he's been a member as long as I have (since May) - he should know where the search button is. Especially when its for such a common problem where there's tons of info out there just waiting for a non-lazy person to find. If he was a true newb I wouldn't have flown off the handle. Not to mention that my original reply wasn't too harsh - I didn't even use any 4 letter words.:p

Not everyone surfs this board daily. Take it easy on the poor guy. His post to crap ratio is probably a lot lower than yours if he's been here as long with only 33 posts.

BTW, mine leaks from the coolant reservior, but not from the hoses. How to stop it? I don't know! The MSP's engine is a hot little b*tch. I do think this will impact the long term reliability of these cars. I can't imagine that popped head gaskets won't be a problem down the road.

I understand what you're saying rocket....and my apologies go out to the original poster. I will still "gently yell" at the next guy that doesn't search though. This was extra frustrating to me because there was a coolant link thread with that same link in it just a few days prior to this one. Anyways, enough of that crap.....I agree that the coolant leaks aren't a good sign for the future. Those hoses will die a premature death due to the heat and I wouldn't be surprised if the head gasket isn't a future problem like you mentioned too.

The engine runs hot and it wasn't designed for FI (like say the WRX's or the VW 1.8t), so I'm curious to see what happens once these get some miles on them. I'm not worried about it, the boost levels are low and I think its fairly well engineered, but if its hot enough to blow coolant out of the reservioir, its pretty hot. I'd like to hook a real water temp. gauge up and see what it tells me.
