How accurate is your trip/mileage computer?

Twice in the last two weeks I've let the gas gauge get down to empty. The first time the computer showed 0 miles remaining, and the second time in showed 17 miles remaining. The first time I could only put 9.5 gallons in and the second only 9 gallons. Is this normal or is mine that inaccurate. Only have about 1300 miles on it.

I read that it's normal.

Supposedly the engineers made it that way because they want to keep the fuel pump submerged in gasoline to keep it cool & prevent early failure.

So they would prefer you fill up when the gauge says close to empty, even though in reality you have a couple gallons left.
