housing hurricane victims

has anyone here housed or do you know someone who has housed hurricane victims? I listed myself online since I have a spare room after the hurricane and have just been contact by someone who has been living in georgia since then it appears.

Looking for tips on what i should be sure to ask about when "screening" or whatever, what kind of things to be sure to establish up front, does anything need to be in writing?

quite frankly my main concern is that i go to work the first morning and they back up a u-haul truck and clean me out......but from the description
*sounds* decent and I would like ot help if i could.

I was a full-time student at a community college in New Orleans and I also worked full-time at Tulane Hospital. I am planning on going to Briarwood College in January and live in student housing. I am looking for a place to stay until then. I will look for a job when I get to Connecticut. I am non-smoking with no kids. When I find housing in Connecticut, I will be driving up. Please feel free to email me or call me at any time.

your thoughts?

It's a good thing that you're helping the hurricane victims..
but the MAIN thing you'd have to do is to set a strict deadline as to when they'd have to leave.
Everything seems good.

If you have a vacant room, buy a pool table for yourself.

I saw what they did to the Superdome, I saw the looting they did, and unless you want your place to turn into the Superdome of Connecticut, I would advise against it. Sure, a small percentage of people were acting like that, but when you are about to let someone share your space, you can't take any chances. And if it is a female that comes, then you have to be worried about her accusing you of doing stuff, just not worth the risk.

Also, isn't the mayor of New Haven or Bridgeport going to use city money to house some displaced victims, they could probably stay there for free..? A big percentage of people displaced have criminal records, felony convictions, sex offenders...

The only benefit I see you getting is the feeling that you did something right, but the risks in this situation far outweigh the benefits.

from Washington Times : Across the nation, state and local authorities are checking evacuees' pasts as they are welcomed into homes, schools, houses of worship and housing projects. In some states, half the evacuees have police rap sheets.

I'd keep the room to myself, honestly. I'm not about to invite someone I don't know in to my house without moderation.

room isnt quite big enough for a pool table unfortunately

you make valid points....

the fact that this person has a car though makes me think they were not one of the people who I have just as little sympathy for as you, who were looting and rioting around the superdome and waiting for someone to come save them....and if the college can verify the person is registered for next semester then it seems like it might be a safe bet...

er, realize that those are materialistic things that mean nothing about the person themself.

do some research. Get it all in writing or report to someone that your taking in a hurricane victim. i dont now do something

I think you people are getting a little too paranoid here. Its nice to see that the people who posted here were so quick to judge 2.5 million people on the actions of a couple thousand who caused chaos in NO. You are a good man by offerring a room and I seriously doubt this person would drive all the way north to CT just to clean you out. Honestly it sounds like a single person trying to make it in the real world that just gave them a douse of "kick in the ass".

Why connecticut? there are like 20 states that are closer than CT....hmmm? (gossip)

why not...kansas? ohio? IL? TN? KY?

it's gotta be an ex-con!

bad joke! i know, props for helping out ur fellow man! (2thumbs)

I'm in Austin right now from southeast Houston. Looking for something to do while we are here. Not quite sure when we will go back because of the traffic. We are staying with family, just looking for something to do to pass the time.

not all of us are criminals from louisiana, the looting and such we witnessed were from gangs and people that lived in the projects. prolly amped up on drugs or comming down from a high.. most of us are good people that would open our homes to any respectable person, thats who u have to find if you want to house person. find someone that respects thereself and 9 times out of 10 they will respect you, we have housed alot of family and luckily my city is above water, but all the surrounding areas arent and are under 3 to 10 feet of water.. its like a new orleans down here with alot less hoolagians.. we have air boat and boat rescues going on right now as we speak in terrebonne parish..

I'd be willing to house some hurricane evacuees ..... just as long as they are cute, young Japanese girls... (boobs) (boobs) (boobs) (boobs)

send some this way

i didn't read the entire thread so if a repost, sorry. there was an article like a week ago where a woman around atlanta housed a "refugee" couple but the couple ended up being from stone mountain, lol. i would say check the person's background and their zip code where they used to leave against the zip codes posted on USPS and UPS websites where they do not currently deliver. that way you do know that the person came from a ravaged area and it is not just some bum
