HKS SSQV BPV/BOV owners please chime in!!

So I'm getting ready to order a HKS SSQV. I went to PG's website and saw that there are two:
HKS SSQ v2 Blow Off Valve - Mazdaspeed3/6/CX-7 Bolt-On Specific [71004-AZ008] ($275) and a HKS Version 2 Combo Pack - Mazdaspeed3/6/CX-7 ($260).

What is the difference between them? Also, does the HKS SSQV have springs and shims like the Forge? How do you tune the HKS? Or is it a self tuning unit?

After reading all the posts, I'm definitely going recirculation...why do people say it sounds weird? How is it different than stock?

Is the HKS a truly better unit than TurboXS?

If you have any other advice or comments, I'd greatly appreciate it. (2thumbs)

thats alot of question...lol
i dont know whats the different between the two...
u dont tune the hks bov, you cant raise the boost if thats what u mean
it doesnt sound weird with mine recirculation....little bit louder than stock with your cai

its so hard to get the clamp on the flange for mounting....

no ADJUSTABLE spring or shims, The old version was adjustable and i believe it is discontinued, my guess is leaking.

Doesnt sound wierd just not loud like hks vta which is sooo nice. Sounds good tho and audible on recirc.

Difference in packs may be what u get with them, like recirc fittings, t's for boost gauge, etc.. id get the pack with everything so u dont waste time and money buying stuff seperately.

I asked that first question over in their own sub forums. One comes pre-assembled so you just put it on and boom, the other one you have to put together. Word has it that the one you have to put together is a b****.

As for sound, I'm not sure it would sound any different recircing, just quieter. The valve itself lends to have an different noise because of its design. Its often thought of as having flutter, but it isn't, its just the way the valve sounds. As far as tuning, I don't think the second gen one needs any, its just plug and play, so to speak. The first one, I have read, does need some spring tuning, but it is just a tensioner, no shims.

From HKS's site, here is how it works, and why it is different from most other BOVs on the market: http://www.hksusa.com/products/more.asp?id=792

I am planning on getting one of these as well, so I've been doing my research. It looks pretty easy to install in a recirc set up, so I may run it VTA for a day or two to see how it feels, and if I don't like it, then I'll set up in recirc.

OK, well I'll order the $275 one...(moon)...give it to me. (lol2)
Man, thats expensive (considering the price of the Forge)...

Thanks for the help guys...(2thumbs)

I wouldn't mind reading more comments on your experiences with this BPV/BOV.

I thought I'd attach this product info:

Some say it sounds weird in recirc because it sounds like compressor flutter. Or they are saying that a vta HKS has a signature sound that is lost when you put the valve in recirc. Either way my valve works great even though I feel the older mk2 and mk1's were superior valves.

You lost me there...mk2, mk1... (huh)

there is some stupid cookies issue you basically have to disable your security settings for cookies atleast for our site to order stuff. we are working on it ATM.

Weird thing was that earlier today I was on the website and it let me in...then I got on it later and it was broken... :(

Redrocketz, can you confirm the differences between the two HKS SSQV that PG offers?

Not to thread jack here, as I'm also interested in learning about the HKS SSQV, but has protege garage's site converted to a secure check-out? I've ordered from you guys in the past and felt very uncomfortable not getting the https://....when entering personal information. I've had my cc# stolen in the past, and I'm hesitant to order from a non-secure site anymore.(jacked)

Just give them a call then... (sun)

i have the newest version on my nissan. its the silver/gray version with the cooling fins on the side. good construction.

the design is that the piston in it that opens (or well it looks more like a valve i guess), is sideways, so physically hks ssqv's cannot leak boost by sheer pressure, they have to be 'activated' to open, which makes them really nice.

basically, you could turn up the boost more and more and the air pushing on the valve wont open it like with a normal BOV (like a greddy or stock designs) its a pull type.

the C clamp is the worst design ever. it's not the fact that it's super tight, its that there is so little room between where the body of the BOV starts to spread out and the flange area that you dont have alot of room to work with. i had to vice my C clamp and make it smaller, its bent but it still works fine. lol. they need to make the 'neck' before the flange a little longer so its easier to work with.

its VERY loud on VTA. it is nice because i have very little issues with my MAFs based car (2.4 litre turbo). no stalling issues, only time it will "dip" below 800 rpms is if i blip it and let off real fast but on normal deceleration, my idle valve catches it very well. i dont know how loud it would be with recirc mode, but it's definitely a signature chirping. i know you all have heard it before.

it does have some flutter to it, but i am running a larger turbo so my boost threshold is higher and thus unless im really getting on it, i get alot of fluttering and some of it IS compressor surge.

but contrary to belief, compressor surge isn't going to kill your turbo if it's just a little. as long as you're not getting compressor surge at full boost and when your BOV should really be opening, you're ok. a little here and there won't kill it.

i will not be running it on my mazda though. as much as i like it, its too loud and i think even in recirc mode it might be too loud...but maybe i'll get to hear someone's in recirc and judge it myself. but until then ill probably end up with the forge.

there are inserts you can buy to change the noise as well, but those are a waste of time to me.

if you want that ricey "look at me i have a bee-oh-vee" noise, this is the unit for you.

i have 1 on my ms3 and i like the sound... the one that is pre-put together i guess you could say, i think is vta only because the pick looks like its making it face 1 direction... and coulda swore the spot where the flange for the bpv is was tilted or a bit higher up or so... truthfully as much as i like my hks if i could do it over again i would have shelled out the money to buy the turbosmart dual port... bolt-on, vta only, recirc only, 50/50... but the sound of the hks makes me happy...
