High rpm at idle and while driving

Hi, I have a 2002 mazda protege that has around 160,000 on it with a manual transmission. Just this week, the check engine light came on and the car started to idle at a high rpm, around 2000. It also shoots up very quickly and goes very slowly when in first gear and I have to get into fourth gear a lot quicker than I used to. The check engine light comes on and off (not flashing, just one trip it's on, the next it's not). Someone told me that it might mean my transmission is shot, anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

yah get the code checked out. and if it has something to do with engine temp. check your connector that goes on top of the water neck jacket. right by the battery , its the sensor that senses your coolant temp .also you just might need a tune up. if you havent already

Only the autos can trip a CEL.

not true. i have a manual and it threw a cel on me when i had idling issues. due to a lose connector for the ect sensor. it would ref at high rpm when at idle. and it did do a hard freeze frame code. hard data
