I was looking at turbos and I saw this in protege garage. Seems like a good deal. Send your turbo in / have it reworked for 600 bucks. Seems like it will give pretty good gains. Just wondering if anyone can fill me in on any thoughts or comments. Ive never seen anyone on these forums with the reworked turbo. Most just get the 3071r. Also how hard is it to install a new turbo? Seems like its a pain to get to it but once there all you do is bolt it up and connect the hoses . . .

Help me Ken :) Im going to spend a grand in december and this might be another option along with the intercooler. Which would get me the most gains? My guess would be the FMIC.

keep in mind if you send us your turbocharger, there is a down time for your car of about two to three weeks. i will have four finished turbos sitting on the shelf middle of next month so anyone who orders around that time will get a fresh turbo and i'll send the one they send me off for rework. trying to cut down on lead times for the customer!

a GT series turbo will generate more peak power. one reason people stick with a rework is because they are accustomed to and like the factory spool time. larger turbos like the 3071, 76 or 35r take longer to spool while generating much more peak power. the reworked K04 is a middle of the road solution to this - you still have a quicker spooling turbo with a larger and longer powerband than what you had stock. plus its a heck of alot safer to bolt this to the stock engine and make more power than going too large with too large a turbo.
 
we use the best seals available for the K series turbos. that said, we do not guarantee that any turbo we sell is smoke free, especially if you have a catless exhaust and no tuning. the engines run too rich to expect no smoke whatsoever without cats. we have had people state they get much less smoke with the reworked turbos than what they had before, but that some smoke is still present. more people have said more often than not that the smoke was eliminated with this turbo. but we are in the end, painters limited by the nature of the canvas we are given to work with.
 
How hard is it to install a new turbo? Looks like a simple bolt on but I may be wrong? How long does it take?
 
you need to unbolt the downpipe and turbo support bracket. remove the turbo inlet and top mount intercooler. unbolt the manifold, with the turbo still attached, and remove them together through the top. unbolt the old turbo and transfer over all your fluid lines. installation is the reverse of the removal. takes about 3 to 4 hours all things told.

Hey Ken... why unbolt the manifold together with the turbo? Can't take the turbo out otherwise??

I think I've been on the MPI turbo for somewhere around 8000-10000 miles and no smoke (other than BLACK - at WOT)

I have the CS DP (catless) and TXS RP (also catless)

exactly, this is to be expected on that kind of setup
