**** hi i just purchase an 03 p5 ***** tune up!!!

03' protege5
Hey good morning, i just bought a protege 5 and it has 130k miles. The timing belt was done already but the engine shakes a lil. I want to do a tune up on the car. Oil, air filters, pcv valve; but the question is what kind of spark plugs should i use on my stock p5????? I went to the auto part store and there are plugs from $15 to $2.99 and all kinds of brands. I would like to see what people are using on their cars? Also is like i said i just bought it. What other maintenance should i be looking at in this car????

Welcome aboard!

1. Run Seafoam[tm] through the engine intake system (search - plenty of info here) - the car runs rich at WOT and carbons up the whole engine.
2. Spray brake cleaner into the EGR port inside the throttle body (to clean the EGR) with a straw on the end of the spray tube on the can to direct it. (search - plenty of info here)
3. Consider swapping the coils as well. They do fail after a while. (search - plenty of info here)

I don't think this a good idea for 2 reasons. Firstly, you can't properly clean the valve without removing it from the throttle body. You'll get a lot more carbon out with it off the car, and you'll have a chance to oil the actuator. Secondly, I don't think it's very safe. Burning certain types of brake cleaner produces a chemical that upon breathing can cause brain damage (more info). If you're spraying a bunch of the stuff into the TB there might be a chance that some of it runs through the engine potentially producing a dangerous gas out of your tailpipe.

Here's the preferred method for EGR cleaning: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?94788-How-To-EGR-Removal-and-Cleaning-Rough-Idle-Fix
