Help with alarm system and battery

Hi all,
I have a 2002.5 P5, and had to disconnect the negative battery terminal to check
the spark plugs. When I reconnected the negative battery terminal my car alarm
started to sound. I had to use the emergency override to shut it off. While I
assume it thought I was trying to hotwire the car, neither my security system
manual nor my service manual says any precautions need to be taken when simply
disconnecting the battery (not that I could find anyway). Does anyone know why
this happened? I assume it was supposed to. Is there a way to avoid the alarm
from sounding whenever I muck with the battery? The alarm was NOT armed when I
was disconnecting the battery.
Thanks for any tips.
Josh

In case anyone runs into the same problem, I've found that my stock alarm arms itself whenever the battery is first plugged-in. This isn't documented anywhere. So now I remove my horn fuse, work on my car, disarm my alarm after hooking the battery back up, then reinstall my horn fuse. This is 100% reproduceable. I've found many people with alarm problems much more severe than this. Just FYI.

Not really a way around it. just expect it to fire the horn at you when you reconnect and if it doesn't, then be pleasantly surprised! ...that's how I did it anyway!

It's happened to me. And then there's a specific procedure to turn it off, I think you need to put the key in the door lock and manually turn it, or something like that.
