I just cleaned my EGR valve and put plugs and wires in my '00 Protege LX
(1.6L) and now it is running horrible. It is whistling and popping and it sounds almost like a VW bug!! I cleaned the EGR just like all the directions I've read in these forums. I've reset the ECU, checked all the hoses and connections..... I first thought that maybe the plug wires weren't hook up so I checked them.............the Coil on Plugs are good and so are the wires that come from the coil pack to the #1 and #3 cyl are all in correct. I mean it is strange, sounds like whistling from the tailpipe and car won't hardly run........anyone got any ideas??" thanks in advance.

Did you put that little metal gasket back on the EGR? Maybe sucking air through and unseen space somehwere?

I dont know why a gasket would cause it to run bad, that may explain the whistling sound though, but im running my egr wide open to the air with a filter on it. I have a CEL for excessive flow but it runs just fine. This was my temp soltion after the egr tube on mine broke. as for the not running, it sounds like a mis-fire issue, your sure the wire goign from the furthest coil to the right(tranny side) is going to the cylinder closest to the cam gears? and the other shorter wire is going to the second cylinder in from the tranny side from the other coil?

so use this diagram too

( == ) ---- coils
--------------> ________________
Cam gear ----> []| |
-------------->| 1 2== 3 4== | <--------Transmission side
-------------->[]|_____________ |

so wire from coil on cynlinder 4 goes to cylinder 1
4 --------> 1 (Long wire)

wire from coil on cylinder 2 goes to cylinder 3
2 ----> 3 (Short Wire)

make sure the coild are plugged in and that the springs in the coil boots are present and didnt fall out.

I think the whistling and rough running are two seperate issues. do as said by above poster and check to make sure the gaskets are all in place. And double check the wire order. Mis-fires do to plug wire issues will make your car sound like a subaru.

hope some of this makes sense and that it will help let us know the progress of your issue.

wires look correct to me, sometimes i get backfire as well and hesitation and i changed the coil, wires and plugs but i'm thinking for some reason it's the plugs because i did not tighten to specs at the time, i think i over tightened, not sure if this would be the problem, i still have to do it properly. i also had a bad MAF which i replaced.
