Help on removing the stock head unit

In a 2001 Mazda Tribute with the storage compartment under the Head Unit. I've used 2 sets of radio keys to try to pull it out, but it won't budge. Do I have to remove the trim around the radio before pulling the radio out?

Please help, and don't flame. I searched the forum, but couldn't find my specific question answered. This is the first Mazda I've owned, and so far, I love it. :)

Thanks,
Jason

The only parts you have to remove are the side DIN covers, then use the radio tools(2 U-shaped tools with little knobs on the ends), put them in the DIN holes and push them outward(as in towards the sides of the cars) and pull out at the same time and it should come out. You don't need to remove any of the radio surround trim.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. I found a whole thread on this, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has had this trouble. LOL Seems that I just haven't got the right hold on it. I've been using 4 removal tools, 2 to each side, but have yet to have any success. I'm thinking there may be a screw in the back of the storage compartment holding it in. I'm gonna try again tonight. If I don't get it tonight, then everyone can just (poke) me. (thumb)

Nah, there's no hidden screws or anything. It might pay to get actual radio tools, you can buy them from any autoparts store. I found mine in a new Tribute. I use them every once in a while at the junkyard.
