I looked around a bit and couldn't find an answer. Don't know a whole lot about car audio so i thought I'd ask.

Right now, i have a 12" Almani and looking to replace it. For lack of better terms, it produces a 'booming' type of bass and I'm looking for the more sharper and crisper sounding bass I had with previous subs.

Is there a way to tell within the specs if it has the type of bass I'm looking for? I've looked around several different places online, but just afraid of getting the same sound.

Also, I have a 2-way 500w amp so if anyone has any suggestions, It would be helpful.

Thanks!

Also, if it helps at all, I listen to just about every type of music.. rock, rap, country, ska, punk, techno, etc..

If you're looking for sharper, crisper bass, your best bet would be switching to a smaller sub, like a 10".

sounds like your box is designed wrong.

I'm going to assume that you have it in a ported enclosure, right?

I have a JL10W7 and if price is not an issue for you, I would have to say that it sounds GREAT...the bass is crisp/deep and sounds great with many different types of music and volumes...I only have one, but it is sooo loud and like I said, can be turned down and still sound good...

x2

I have a 10w6v2 in a sealed box, and the W6 and W7 subs are incredible.

The W6 is slightly better SQ but the W7 is considerably louder, while still sounding great. If you are upgrading, then JL is definitely a company to look at.

That's why I'm trying to sell my Alpines...JL makes the best subs imo...

A box designed for the specific low frequency transducer in question, is way more important then the actual sub, imo.

JL's stuff is great, but you can get the same from an alpine if you tune it right.

The reason you are getting that booming sound is because it's a ported box and not because it has anything to do. If you don't want to spend that much money, I would get a 12" Alpine Type R in a sealed box. Do not get 10" subs, or else you will get a very punchy type of bass, and wont hit alot of the notes you want to hit in any kind of music. You can find Alpine Type R's for cheap on evay, and your amp will be fine pushing.

Your other Option is to just get a sealed box for the sub you currently have. Just make sure the box size is within spec of what the sub requires.

Yep, the guy in the store said it would be great and designed for my kind of sub so I went with it.

The reason you are getting that booming sound is because it's a ported box and not because it has anything to do.

You're getting that booming sound, because the port's tuning frequency is too high, resulting in a spike in the frequency response of the sub. Good for SPL (which is what most people want) bad for sound quality. Was the box MADE specifically for your woofer, or was it one of the general purpose ones available at the store?

i can vouch for this.

unless the box was made specifically for the woofer using a good program, there is no way of knowing for sure what response it has....

i had an alpine type r in a 1 cubic foot sealed box because it fell in alpine's recommendations and i figured sealed would give me a flat response.

little did i know that a ported box, that was 2.5 cubic feet (alot bigger than alpine's ported recommendations) with a 17" port, would offer the flattest SQ response, and, because of the tuning, would do so with minimal power! the goal was to keep the response as flat as possible, and what worked was something that i would not have known without designing it on a program.

a good properly designed box can make a pedestrian woofer sound awesome, and a poorly designed box can make the best woofer in the world sound like total junk.

so, what i'm saying is you can probably make your woofer sound pretty good if you use a properly designed box (and your source is clean, and your crossover is set right, etc)
