1999 Mazda Protege
First, Let me say I am new to this forum as I now own my first ever Mazda. Its an oldy, but a goody! Got a 1999 Protege 4-door Sedan. I cannot determine the trim level of the vehicle. When I am trying to buy parts they ask LX, DX or ES. I have the 1.6L engine. Other parts i have which i thought would help are:

sunroof, AC, Auto Trans, power locks, rear spoiler.

The only sticker on the side is SE. If anyone has any info on how i can determine the model, it would be greatly appreciated. For example, I know there is a difference on the front calipers from the LX to DX. I would love to be able to know for sure which one i have. thank you for any help....

If its a 99 1.6 With power stuff and sunroof then its a LX like mine I have a 1.6 LX Power everything w/sunroof. Now you say it says SE then SE stands for Special Edition. I dont recall there being a different trim level of SE but im not 100% sure I could be wrong but atleast you know its not a DX. DX models dont come with power anything they are manual windows and door locks and the outer door handles are not colored they are black. post up some picks

Ok, thx for the advice. I will take some pics tonight. It does seem odd. Maybe the serial number could shed some clues? It is a Canadian car. Definately no Trim labels like DX or LX. 100% says SE at back of front quarter panel.

yea, it seems i must have a hybrid then, lol. I got sunroof with power locks but not power windows. The door handles are black not painted. It def has 1.6L engine. Has AC and only trim label is SE on front side, not rear. Puzzling as there is not much help on the web...

That was a Canadian only model, we didn't get them here and I don't know anything about them.

Well crap. Apparently the web knows nothing either. Like to know what comparable i have for most parts sites. LX or DX i guess....ughh

Sooo, I called the local Mazda dealer who said he answers these same questions at least once a week. Apparently the SE was definitely only a Canadian designation. Most aftermarket parts stores around here use US based systems which is where the LX DX questions come from. the only thing that matters is it the 1.6 or 1.8 so i've been told. Clear as mud eh???

Yea, it has caused me some problems, thats for sure. Certain parts, like brake components, only need the LX/DX vs ES designation where others are basically a crapshoot. Not much info regarding this issue on the web. Glad to finally know though..
