HELP! Convince me to buy '06 mazda5

The MAZDA5 will be a 'future proof vehicle' budget-wise. There is no need to get another vehicle when the family grows in number. As for winter, Our mazda5 is in Saskatchewan, where winter is dry and cold and frozen snow stays on the roads the entire winter. Mazda5 with decent winter tires is just doing fine. There are some days when there is heavy snow storm, and snow piles up in the drive way. Then in those very few days in a winter, I wish I had an suv. By the time I decide to window shop for suvs, it will be spring again. :).

I have not experienced the M5 not starting because of the cold. I do try to use the block heater.

As for 'heated seats' and heat in the back of the car, I feel it is redundant.
In winter, when its real cold, we are all 'bundled' up anyway before we go out of the house and into the car.

a remote starter is highly recommended.

Future-proof, I like that....
It sounds like your winterdriving condtions are similar to ours and I'm glad to hear it performs well enough.

Are your decent snow tires 205/60R16?

Go for it...

A lot of good posts and a lot of good advice.

Given all of this and some of your clarifications, I feel good recommending that you go through with this. Given that it sounds like you could use a "new" car, and given that the off-roading is only a maybe at this point, I think you'll be quite happy with the 5.

Worst case, if you do end up living where the paved roads end, you can always look at replacing the 5 then.

Best of luck.

When you set the HVAC to automatic mode and it's heating, it'll blow air high and low. The rear seats will get air high from the front vents and low from the vent outlet underneath the front seats. In cooling mode, it blows air high only, but I always aim the vents up high to have cool air travel along the ceiling of the car. The cool air drops down evenly across all three rows, keeping everyone nice and comfy.

I'm sorry, I made a mistake in my earlier post. I've fixed it, but the original text is below. I originally wrote "VDC" when I meant to write "VTD." VTD is the planetary center diff system Subaru uses, whereas VDC is a traction and stability control system which incorporates braking of individual wheels, etc.

I agree with you. The older Subies get, the more prone the viscous center power divider is to locking up. Part-time AWD, or one of their other power divider systems like the planetary system in the VDC cars (to include later-model turbo Bajas), is preferable to me.

Thanks for the update. The typo didn't catch me too off guard. I saw that they updated to this new technology 10 years ago.

Regardless, my wife and I bought the mazda5 yesterday. It's nice. We'll let you know how it works for us in the long run.

The car is excellent so far. We've noticed only a few quirks, for example only the drivers door unlocks with a key.

A pretty shot.

The tires and wheels we aren't crazy about.

The Car's battery died one time and the ONLY door the key unlocks is the drivers door. (uhm)

We only have one keyless entry between my wife and I. Not being able to fully utilize a regular key is weak sauce.

Check Ebay for replacement remotes. Uncut key blanks/remote fob combo's can be had for about $50 us + shipping.
