Hi, I am new to this forum. Wanted to introduce myself and also hope that someone could help me out with my problem.. I have a 1993 Mazda 626, 2.5L Automatic Transmission. I am thinking my problem is a tranny problem. I just bought this car for 200 dollars. When I am driving my car the rpm needle wont go down unless i let off the gas. It is as though it is stuck in second gear. when I go about 50 mph the rpms are at about 3000 rpms. It is a gas hog right now and would like to fix it so it will drive normal. I can not take it on the high way because it uses way too much gas. PLEASE HELP!!!

What kind of mileage are you getting? Also, you're not in 2nd gear if your only turning 3k rpms at 50mph. 2nd tops out right around 60-65mph in the neighborhood of 6500-7k rpms. You might be in 3rd, which would mean it's not going into O/D.

The gearing on our cars is short, meaning the revs are high and you go slow. That's great for acceleration, but limits the top speed. I'm not sure how else to explain it. You just have to realize that along with that, the rpms will be higher than something else, say a Blazer, on the highway. I'm not trying to ignore your problem, but just trying to explain things a bit.

Is the overdrive light flashing, or is it in hold mode? Honestly, I don't have any experience with autos, but I'm sure you'll get help on 626.net.
