Hella Horn Install

Question for the forum....I recently purchased some new Hella dual trumpet horns https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned) to replace the horrible stock horn and have an idea on how to install them however.... based on my search I have seen people installing new horns without relays?

Will these horns I purchased which did come with a relay need to be installed with a relay or can I get away with not using one? Thanks guys

You should be alright, as long as the combined current draw from the aftermarket horns doesn't exceed the horn fuse rating.

each trumpet draws 6 amps, and so the combined (2) trumpets draws 12 amps. Im assuming since we cars have a 15amp fuse I should be ok?

Been thinking about upgrading my horn as well with the Hella Trumpets. I had the Supertones installed on my WRX but wasn't crazy about the tone. They were plenty loud though!

Let us know how things turn out (i.e. pics of install, where you mounted, or whatever details you can offer up) :)

Here's a sound sample for those who are curious:

Hank will do! I just picked them up for like $20 shipped on Amazon with a 20% coupon. It ends May 31st. Was going for the sickspeed since they were cheaper but I found these for a steal and couldn't resist.

That is a good deal indeed! Ordered a set as well :)

click on the link above and look under the price you will see the coupon link.

When you installed your hella horns did you use a relay?

Found the coupon..order a set too!

It was more than 10 years ago so I can't recall really. I want to say no.

I put a set of "Compact Italian Airhorns" from Griots garage in my Miata and they made a huge difference. Definitely got some attention when you honked. Easy plug n play, and they're so compact that fitting them was simple. Griots no longer has them, but they were basically the same as the Stebel Nautilus horns you can find on Amazon/eBay.
I grew up around Porsches, and this horn sounds a lot like one from an early 911, which to me is a good thing. :)

Not my car or vid, but the horns sounded like this:

installed them today and wow what a difference! Anything is better than oem lol! But they do sound rich and deep!

Where did you mount them? Did you have to cut the grill trays? And did you have to use additional wiring?

just ran additional wiring to the other horn...Have not mounted the grill yet since I plastic dipped it last night too..I am hoping it doesn't hit. I will let you know later on today if i need to trim the grill or move the horns slightly to make them fit!

completely forgot to take pics sorry! let me see if I can snap some! The horns fit behind the grill with no issue and didn't have to cut/trim the grill. They fit behind the grill perfectly.!

That's great that no trimming was necessary. I just need to get up enough motivation to take off the grill, mount the horns, and mess with the wiring.

took a total of 40 mins for me being the first time taking the grill off and everything.

So did you have to splice into the stock horn wiring and split it into two?

I mounted mine farther down on the hood latch support where they are behind the bumper instead of right there behind the grill in view.

Did you use the bracket that came with the horns?
Yeah, they were basically 2 strips with a hole in each end and I used a single bolt thru both of them and the radiator support where it already had a hole. They sit side by side touching behind bumper between upper and lower grills or behind where license plate mounts to bumper. Definitely more out of weather and plain sight. They do not sound any quieter there.
