Heavy steering

I have a problem with the steering effort on my 07 MX-5, 3,000 miles. It feels as if there is no power steering for the first 2-3 of steering wheel movement. When the car is tracking on the highway it requires a dangerous amount of input to make slight directional adjustments. It feels like it takes too much effort to break the straight line direction of the car and when the direction is changed it takes an additional counter movement to keep it straight.

I noted the problem when I first purchased the car last year. I brought it to the dealer's attention 3 times. The dealer said it was normal. It is not normal compared to new MX-5's that I test drove on the lot.

Subsequently I had the wheels aligned at the dealer at my own expense thinking that would remedy the condition. I also had them check the steering and tires but they said they didnt know what to do.

The effort to turn the steering wheel on my MX-5 requires 5 pounds of pressure (my estimate) while the steering effort on my other cars require only 2 or 3 pounds of effort. I have taken a test drive in new MX-5s and the steering effort is much lighter.

The power steering fluid is full, the tire pressure in the tires is correct so at this point, it must be a mechanical problem in the steering rack or the power steering pump.

What do you suggest to do?
