Have you guys seen the redesigned WRX?

I think it looks much better now. The only problem I have with the WRX is that it just looks kind of cheap. The outside of it seems like a cheap plastic toy to me for some reason. I'd take a turbo MP3 with a LSD any day :).

I am a big big suby fan. My impresion of the redesign is mixed. I really like the bugeye look because it gives the car character. As for subaru build quality well it has this whole BMWness to it. The doors slam with a solid thunk. When lowered its not as bumby and jarred like a pro. The interior has better quality materials and the paint is much thicker than our cars............this is obvious because the car is more expensive. Do I think the sti is worth 35g's? Damn skimpy.......its worth every penny and then some. For that price range nothing can touch it in handling, power and acceleration.......well the evo and thats comming in the end of january for under 29000 per the ceo of mitsu. I have been researching this car and considering buying one. Supposedly the new power train on the evo8 will be rated at 300+hp but will be labled at 276 due to japans hp regelations. Consider we in the u.s get a watered down version of atleast 250hp but realisticalt the evo8 will be more in the ballpark of 270hp. Cant beat that for 29 grand. A super car that does 12.9 sec 1/4 miles and 0-60 in the sub 4 sec range!!!!

I tell you...that Evo is going to strike fear in the hearts of many...

To arms!...slap on those turbos people!...amongst many other upgrades...;)

I bet the US Evo is going to have record setting dealer markups...

I hope someone will be crazy enough to get a proteg to evo/sti levels...comon its only $$$ ;)

A modded Evo can certainly get those numbers, but not stock. Stock Evos, even JDM run about 4.4 0-60 and 13.6 1/4 miles. Not that that's anything to sneeze at. But even the mighty Evo needs some help to get under 13 seconds.

It's funny that a lot of people that own Acura RSXs and Audi A4/S4s and such have been poopooing the WRX since it arrived because of the interior. Just wait till the Evo arrives! In British press, they say the STi's interior is plush compared to the Evo's. I guess those guys will have to b**** about the Evo's interior even harder, because they'll be getting spanked harder. Why is it people don't get the concept of an uncompromised performance vehicle? I can see all the dumb arguments about the WRX getting recycled for the Evo.

As for modding a Protege to those levels: good luck. I'd love to see it, but I'd be skeptical of being able to do it without pouring way too much money into it. Not that that hasn't been done before either. But aren't the Protege's engine internals too weak to take that kind of power? I guess that's why you mentioned crazy and money, huh? ;)

sportcompact did testing on the evo 7 twice and initially got 12.9 1/4 times. The second series of tests the evo ran 13.3
Also a half dozen other auto mags tested the evo at 12.9

spoolinmp3: The Evo they ran 12.9 with was an Evo VI TME. The last Evo VII they tested went against their project WRX car, and got a 13.4 1/4 mile and a 5.2 second run to 60. And that's still quicker than the red Evo VII they tested awhile ago. Here's the quote from the SCC website:

Going Straight
Project WRX: 13.5 sec. @ 99.3 mph
Lancer EVO VII: 13.4 sec. @103 mph
Thanks to the EVO's insistence on destroying its clutch, the dragstrip contest was the closest of all five tests. We anticipated a high 12- to low 13-second pass from the Lancer, but it wasn't to be. Some real pedal feedback and a stronger clutch would go a long way in allowing the Lancer a quicker quarter-mile time. After several clutch-smoking attempts to get the Lancer off the line quickly, we managed a 13.4-second pass at 103 mph. The WRX was only a tenth behind running 13.5 seconds at 99 mph. A quick look at the trap speeds and the fact the Lancer takes .4 seconds less to accelerate from 30 to 70 mph show its power advantage.

However, the WRX is still quicker to 60 mph (5.1 sec. for the WRX, 5.2 sec. for the EVO), thanks again to some serious feedback through the clutch pedal and friction material which can handle the abuse of an all-wheel-drive launch. At the dragstrip, the EVO felt most out of its element. It's almost as if the Mitsubishi engineers don't want it to launch well on tarmac. This is particularly puzzling after the12.9-second pass we saw in the last EVO VI we tested. This yellow car, however, is .2 seconds quicker than the red EVO VII we tested in our November '01 issue. If you're confused by the inconsistency, join the club. We have no theories.
