I ran over some debris in the road i couldn't weave around it without hitting someone. well the end result was i hit the object and i blew my sidewall of my tire! Well i went to replace the tire and boy was i in for a rude awakening!!!! I found out that the tire we have on our vehicles are not even made by dunlop anymore and not many people can get them. I called tire direct and tire rack and tire direct did not carry them any more. Tire rack said they had them back ordered up to more than a month. I called dunlop to ask if they had any they said they would get back to me , that has been a week ago!!!! Well i also had a difficult time here in town plus it is hard finding a tire in 195/50-16 so i ordered a similar tire from dunlop their new sp sport fm901 tire which is almost identical. it will be the only tire on my car that is different i had no choice what else could i have done? I have this little temporary spare on my car that sucks!!! people are staring at my car like crazy witht this tiny wheel on my car sorry about babbling also i am new to the site. Just for your info in case some one has this problem. Maybe we can get together and yell at mazda! What tires are on the 2002.5 protege5?

first off, welcome aboard!, secondly, it still gets me that mazda offers these badass cars, with nice tires, and then some a-hole decides to discontinue a oem offered tire. man i don't get it, so to answer your question, yes, people have had problems gettin replacement tires all along.:( sad to hear about the blowout too!

i prob still have another 10k-15k miles to go on my tires (hopefully), i am at 17k now. i have seen some new dunlops at my dealership with the same size and the sticker on the tire said " designed for the sport compact market" or something like that. don't know if that is the tire you describe but i don't see whats the biggest deal about having another tire. its still made by dunlop and the size is the same.

hm....Well....actually I asked my dealer before I bought my car. The dealer told me they would have to get it from Japan if I decided to get the same ones. And I said to myself " Japan eh ?? Must be expensive"...
And the dealer told me its 300$ Canadian EACH ~!!!!!!!!! haha.....
There you go...if you want the original ones.....go find your dealer.....

I checked the lists that the TireRack and Tire.com and others to see if we would be able to get our tires in the event they go out. Dunlop has a SP5 (model) but it is not the same as the ones that came in our P5's. The side wall style is different and so is the tread on them. Plus, if you try to get them from the dealer they will cost a whole lot of money due to the fact that they are not made anymore. The best thing to do is get another type that is the same size and save some money. Unless you are going to upgrade your tire and wheels. Hope this help u out.

Stupid question but, yellowMP5 said "i prob still have another 10k-15k miles to go on my tires (hopefully), i am at 17k now".

How long do tires usually last if I dont burn out and skid often?

I don't know from the top of my head, but I think they are to last to 40k. However, I maybe mistaken. Go to your P5 and check your books, there you should find besides the factory maintenance book a 2 page Dunlop pamphlet and it should tell you what the milage is for the tires. The Mazda maintenance book should also tell you but they do not specify the brand of tires. It is sort of generic. Hope this helps.

I checked a couple of online tire stores here in Canada and both list the SP Sport 5000 as being available in our size at less than CDN$150. Whether they actually have any in stock is another thing, obviously, but I wouldn't go back to the dealer for tires, that's for sure. I also think I'd choose an all-season tire from another manufacturer over the Dunlop FM901, which is a summer performance tire.

Have u had this problem?

You are right. The SP 5000 is also here in the states, but it is not the same as the one on our P5's. If you look our tires after the 5000 it has an "r" I believe, or an "s" which makes ours a little different from the regualr SP5000. The tread and side wall are different also. These tires are suppose to be all-weather sport radials. Is matter of choice once is time to swap tires, as for me once I'm ready to change mines I will go with something else. As long they are all-weather sport radials. There is plenty to choose out there.

You're right, it's an M (ours are the SP Sport 5000 M). I guess the problem is that 195/50-16 is an odd size and there isn't a huge number of alternatives. I usually buy Michelin tires but they don't even seem to have a tire in this size at all.

Have u had this problem?

Yeah, our tires are a little different. But, some manufactures do have our size. Kumho, Falken, Nitto. Don't know about Michelin thought, also sometimes when you are checking on tire sizes is better to check the tire manufacturers web site to see if they have the size or not. When checking books and some of the sites that sell tires, they do not list all of the sizes available. I guess they want to sell you what they carry and what is on most demand out there.

i think i saw that yokohama has some vr and zr rated tires for our size...albeit somewhat expensive...yeah...dreading the day when i have to change my tires...i like my tires...oh well...maybe when that day comes it will be time for new wheels too...lol

the reason they are different is that on is semetric and the other is asemetric and if anybody is interested i have two for sail for $150 no tread wear at all ,off the back

Much debate on this. All I can tell you is that those people who are only getting 20,000 miles from the Dunlops are abusing them on a regular basis, or inflating them wrong (too much; too little - it's still abuse).

I don't "granny" my car, but I don't abuse it either. No real skidding, and no burnouts. But I do rip a corner now and then, and frequently shoot offramps at twice the posted speed.

I have 25,000 miles on my Dunlops, and they are still going real strong. In fact, I fukked up and didn't rotate them at all until 23,000 miles (recomendation is every 8,000, I think) - still, no problems at all.

I am expecting to easily see 40,000 miles from them. The only reason I might get rid of them is to buy some nicer rims, which may require different tires.

BTW - I have the Sport 5000s on a Pro5 - not sure what the life of the 9000 series on the MP3 is.

tires

yeah i had that same thing happen to me i hit something in the road and the side wall bubled i couldnt find a tire but but i got one special order by discount tire.

Tires for our loved ones...

Before I bought my Red P5, I checked with a local tire shop called "Les Pneus Robert Bernard" and the best deal offered to me was Yokohama Avid H4 in 205-40-16 at less than $125cdn (that was last February).

You can also get the A520 from the same manufacturer but at $175cdn each, and they are VERY noisy and don't last long (I drive 40000km/25000miles on the highway per year).

During winter, I use 14" steel wheels with Yokohama Guardex F720 in 185-65-14 and they are great for what I do.
