Hatch is rusting on my 2003.5?!

I've never noticed anything like that on protege5 or any others that i've seen. Wasnt there a thread about the yellow paint being different in the others in that it was subject to more swirles? could this also make it open to rusting more? It was something with the paint mixture in the yellow missing one of the ingredients, I dunno exactly.

If anyone remembers what thread this was discussed in, please post the link. I am curious if Mazda fixed any of these problems outside of warranty.

I recall it being said that the yellow paint isn't like the other paints in that the yellow does not have a seperate clearcoat. It's some kind of paint and clearcoat in one mixture. When I polished my car I ended up with a slightly yellow towel.

Edit: whoa, this is an old thread...

This is known as single stage paint. You're right the clearcoat is mixed in rather than applied in a stage after the base color coat dries. It has advantages and disadvantages. You can really bring back oxidized single stage paint beautifully. I've seen some amazing transformations on cars. I just think it sucks that Mazda can't seem to paint cars in a way that doesn't totally suck.

All of our cars are still covered under the "rust perforation" warranty, and will be for a couple more years. I think it's 7 year unlimited mileage. It doesn't cover surface rust (like on the undercarriage of the car) but covers when paint is bubbling. The only think that sucks is that you don't get to choose what body shop it gets fixed at.

I had my rear fenders redone under this warranty a couple summers ago, and will probably need to again this spring.. it was already pretty bad during the fall.

Yes, I hate the fact MD uses salt, and that I haven't been able to wash my car in a few days. I had my car up on the lift in October and saw some rust forming underneath. My mechanic grabbed a few cans of rubber undercoating and sprayed everything down with a layer. It's still disturbing to see on a relatively newer car :(

hmmm interesting but I doubt it. If it was that simple, why wouldn't all cars have that anyway? That's my reasoning for being skeptical of most stuff like that.

Actually they have only been out for a few years but I first noticed them at some bass tournaments, last year they were mounted on some trailers and apparently it was a new feature for that trailer manufacturer so only time will see. It wouldn't be in a car manufacturers best interest to have rust free cars for life.

My badges on the hatch were rusted and i got it fixed through warranty, but i have now found rust on the seam on my hatch as well, i am pissed, In the last few eeks i had more problems with this Mazda then i did with my 1988 Cavalier an it is not like they are cheap problems.

Starting to wondering about the Mazda reliability.

Here is a pic of my paint chip problem. It just started about 2 weeks ago.

I also added a pic of my antenna issue. The rubber/foam material is falling apart :(

Bad news man. That's not paint chipping, that's clearcoat failure. Only way to save it is basically a repaint. It will spread, and there is really no way to stop it.

That picture also proves to me that the Mazda yellow was NOT a single stage paint. Single stage paint won't have the clear layer peel away from the base coat like that because it's mixed in.

Well maybe vivid yellow isn't but I know blazing yellow is (I had to have a blazing yellow hood repainted for my car and there was just a big ol single stage layer on there.

I havent replaced it yet but from what I can tell its like 70 bucks for a new antenna from the dealer... lawl I dont know what im gunna do yet, been putting it off and working on more important things

I have an 02 with 90k on it and it is rusting around the P5 badge. I bought the car used last year but didn't notice the rust until this year. When I brought the car to my local Mazda dealership they told me the paint was only covered up to 80,000 kms. I live in eastern Canada. Looks like were out of luck in this region. :(

Rust is covered for unlimited mileage in the US, I would be surprised if that was different up north. They do make a distinction between surface rust (not covered) and rust perforation (covered). It has to be rust coming from underneath paint or a rust hole in the car to be covered.

Aside from my rear fenders that are bubbling again, the other day I noticed a spot of rust (a bubble that has popped or whatever) on the roof of my car, on the front edge right where the windshield meets with the roof. I need to get to the dealership to have them look at it before I put my summer wheels/hood back on so my car can look sorta semi a little bit stock (unless they open the hood, then all bets are off haha.

The dealership I went to the first time my car was rusting (Modern Motors Mazda in CT, their service department is full of dickheads .. avoid at all costs) said they were going to void my warranty because they claimed the rust was caused by my wheels. The rust wasn't on my fender edge, it was at the seam between the rear bumper and the fender.. not really near the wheels.

Really? They cover rust for unlimited miles/kilometers? I sure hope so, because I've got some bubbling appearing above my left-rear wheel well. Going to take her to the dealership sometime this week to see if they'll fix it, or if I'll have to.
