i just had the clutch line replaced in my car. the story in my previous post is the clutch line broke on me in the middle of traffic and i had to get it towed. the pedal was stuck on the floor and i could not get into gear at all. fluid was under my car and the clutch line was soaked. today i picked up my car from the mechanic pretty close to closing time and for the life of me i could not push the lever into gear. i had to push really hard to get it into any gear; 1-5 + reverse. infact it would grind when i tried to get into reverse. the clutch pedal operation was fine, but i had to use an excessive amount of force to pop it into gear. i never left the mechanic's lot and went back in and told them about it. he came back out and checked it and said it wasnt that stiff when he pulled it out of the garage and parked it. he pulls it back in and rebleeds the system and says there was no air at all. now the lever is much better but still requires an extra amount of force.
he suggested i try it over the weekend. if it does not improve to bring it back. he said could be several things:
1.) he assured me he replaced the defective clutch line and nothing was wrong with the new part. fluid was bled again and no air was found coming out.
2.) he said it could be the clutch master cylinder. something about the rod that the cylinder pushes may not be engaging the clutch properly. he said it normally does not happen, but could have been related to the clutch line failing, and did not experience any symptoms that would indicate this happened.
3.) he said worst case scenario we'd have to replace the clutch. he asked me if i had any clutch work done or upgraded aftermarket clutch to which i told him no. no transmission work was ever done to this car.
i am not sure of the differences in operation of the master or slave clutch cylinders, but does that sound accurate? i would prefer to replace the master cylinder this weekend if it is a project that a novice can accomplish with some basic hand tools. thanks for any insight.
