Greddy Turbo Timer question

The first mod I made to my car was putting in a Greddy Full Auto Turbo Timer back in March of 2004. It worked perfectly until I recently had to get a new alternator put in. Now when I turn the key off the car seems to shuts all the way off and a split second later it then turns back on with the engine reving up to just under 2k rpm's then drops back down to the normal idle of around 700 rpm's until the turbo timer is done and the engine shuts off. Before when I turned the key off the rpm's would not dip at all until the turbo timer counted all the way down and the engine shut off. Does anyone know why this is happening and if this could damage my turbo at all? Thanks.

Did you unplug your TT before installing the alternator? There is a thread on here where somebody was jumping their car, and they didn't unplug their TT and it messed it up. I don't see how switching the alternator could have caused any electrical spike, but it may have caused your TT to malfunction. try switching it out with another unit to see if you can isolate the problem to the TT.

i also read that this is sometime a problem after initial install...perhaps being w/o power (becuase im sure they disconected your battery for this) the TT "forgot its settings". Some posted that after a a short while it stopped dropping off like that. Fortunatley when i installed mine..i didnt get that.

i would suggest disconnect the battery for a minute the reconnect it. When i had to jump my car my greddy tt stopped and that fixed it.

I myself didn't replace my alternator, unfortunately I am not the most skilled when it comes to working on cars so I had a friend of mine who is a mechanic do it. After reading your response I asked him yesterday if he unplugged my TT before installing the alternator and he said that he did. If he actually did or not I will never know. When you say try switching it out with another unit you are talking about another TT, right? I don't know anybody else who has one so I don't know how I would go about doing that. Thanks for the advice though.

The mechanic who switched my alternator out was the same guy who installed my TT in the first place. As I said, it worked perfect for a year up until he replaced the alternator so it worked fine after the initial install. He did disconnect my battery to do all the work. I think it has been about 3 months since he did the alternator so I don't know if mine is going to stop dropping off like the other people's who you mentioned. Although I would like it to work like it used to, I can live with it doing this. I'm just worried that the split second that it basically shuts off when I first take the key out is doing damage to my turbo. What do you guys think, am I overreacting?

I will do this today and let you know. I hope it fixes it. Thanks for the advice.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back on here, I had to go out of town for a couple weeks. Well I disconnected my battery to reset the ecu and the turbo timer is still doing the same thing. Like I said before, I can live with it but do you think there is any damage being done to my turbo?

as long as you let it sit for a lil bit after driving hard on it you will be fine...

It helps to turn off ur tt sometimes. My tt acted up a while back so i just turned it off for a bit .Problem fixed.

When you say it was acting up, what was it doing? How long did you turn it off for before the problem fixed itself?

It was doing the same thing like you explained. All I did was turn the tt off for like a min or so then turn it on and problem gone. To reset Electronic devices like a tt is a good idea from time to time. Also when before turning your car off you should let it idle for a bit like 5 seconds .Thats what do.

Nice, I was hoping that somebody on here had the same problem as me and knew how to fix it. I appreciate it and will give this a try today after work. Thanks again.

Thanks again for the advice but the tt is still acting up. I turned it off for a while (15 mins) then turned it back on and then waited 5 seconds after I was done driving before turning the key off and it still did the same thing. My boy just won a new greddy tt at some evo event so I am going to try switching mine out with his to see if its the unit as chopstick suggested.

Yup, I switched mine and his on my lunch break and his brand new one works perfectly. Time to start looking for a new one. Thanks for all the advise everyone.

Keep an eye on the subaru forums (www.nasioc.com). I just bought a used one for pretty cheap, and you can get a new one from vendors on there for around $80 shipped.
