Got a 1974 RX4 Coupe UNRESTORED & NEW*Added PICS

Hello All,

A while back I posted news about a 1974 RX4 Coupe in as new all original condition I heard about for sale by the original owner, a 94 year old woman. Well I did it. I dont have it yet but will have it transported in the next week or so. I was going to drive it the 9 hours home but after seeing it in person I have decided that this car should not be driven that long of a trip.

I think it was a lucky find.

It turned out to be more than I expected. Not only was it like new but she and her late husband were car fenatics. RX4 baby has 56000 original KMS. Metalic blue with off white interior and was rust proofed from day one at the dealer. She had all dealer service records from day one (not many). Also never winter driven and always waxed, buffed, and kept indoors. This baby still has the original rubbers on (although they will need replacing). Looked like time has stood still when I saw it.

I will post some pictures after she gets to me.

Updated July 29th.
I have posted two pictures below with a note attached. Just click on them to enlarge. Its the third posting on this thread. Pictures are poor quality and the color is off (blue is lighter than in picture), the owner used a cheap color copier. This baby is much nicer than in the pics. They don't do her any justice. The lady in the picture is the original owner. No, she did not come with the car. :)

******Updated July 31st. Here are some better pictures. Car has only 33K miles. Also learned, according to owner that this was the actual car used at the 1974 Detroit Auto show to unvail the RX4 to North America. I can't proove or confirm that at this time. They live about two to three hours north of Detroit in Canada in a tiny town. According to her they bought it at the show and had it delivered through thier local dealer. She does not recall if there were several RX4's on display or just the one but she thinks there was a few variants (4 door and wagon). There are more picture two posts down.

Regards

Max

Here Are two Pictures

very nice!! post some pics.

Hello Again,

Here are two pics. These were taken recently. Take note that they were taken with a poor camera then photocopied at a copy center. She is 94 and does not own a computer. That in mind the color is off and the quality is very poor. The blue on the car is actually lighter in color than the picture shows and the car is MUCH nicer. The paint is 100% original and scratch free. The pictures do not do this baby any justice. The lady in the picture is the original owner. She did not come with the car.

I will post some better pictures when I get my baby here.

*********I removed the poor pictures and have added better ones here and on my first post. Updated July 31st 2006.

Regards

Max

Condition - Almost New

looks to be in great condition (thumb)

Hello,

The pictures are really poor quality & colors are off. The condition is almost like new. It could be put in a showroom next to an RX8 and call it a 2007 retro model like the new Beetle or Mini-it would come close to passing. The owners lived in such a small town that did not even have an airport. I had to fly to a near by city, rent a car and drive over to go and see it. They only used it to go to the local market, dentist, neighbours, and as in the picture car shows. I heard about it by complete chance through some odd luck by word of mouth.

I will post nicer pictures when she arrives.

regards

Max

I think that's awesome. I bet the lady is happy the car that she & her hubby had such great memories of is going to a home where it will be loved & appreciated! :D

Hello,

When I first got news of this car I wasn't really looking for another Mazda or car for that matter. I had a 1990 RX7 Turbo II back in the day and regret ever selling that car in 1997 with on 21K on it. I was bit by the rotary bug thats for sure and have always longed to have another. Being into vintage cars these days I thought it an excelent chance to satisfy both end of the spectrum. So off I am selling my 1976 Corvette Stingray & 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV2000.

Back to price, as I mentioned, everyone I asked about had no idea of value. I even tried these forums and no one was able to lend a hand in pricing. Most just wanted to know where the car was. Lets just say the lady is 94 years of age but she is no dummy. She new what she had. She wanted more than $15000.00 for it but I quickly convinced her that she was way out of range. We finally concluded at $8500.00 Canadian dollars. Is that too much? I don't know. Considering that this car needs nothing (is ALL original with no faults or signs of aging inside or out) except for 4 new tires I think its very fair. I have seen a few good condition RX3's restored or original go for as high as $9000.00 on Ebay but never an RX4. I have seen very little mention of these coupes as well. Aside from this one I have only seem them in pictures on the web. Obviously this one has the original 13B motor first introduced in this 74 model year. Mazda seized to use this motor in 76 until the special edition RX7 in 1984 and so on. So I guess the car has some good collector traits.

Anyways, thats my story and price I paid.

Regards

Max

damn...I'd say you got a deal...but I'm no collector so I could be talkin out of my ass. Just seems so for a car that rare, in that good condition.

Yeah i'd gladly pay that for one in showroom condition. I'd like to see better pics when you get them, especially rear ones of the 4 tail lights :). Congrats on the sweeeeet car.

dang nice buy, so its not gonna be much of a driver car, more for looks? or are you planning to drive it around?

Nice find! I autocrossed one a time or two when they were new. The car belong to one of the other autocrossers and he did fairly well with it. IIRC he was a Mazda tech at one of the local dealerships.

Wow, that is crazy. You are really lucky to find one in that condition. It's beautiful.
I am seriously jealous.

Nice! You're a lucky guy! It's cool to own a piece of mazda history. We used to have a Rotary pickup, but had to sell her as we didn't have the money to transport her 1100 miles when we moved back in 03. If i had known we'd be coming back to Texas so soon, I would have stored her. doh!

Congrats and we look forward to more pix! :)

A nice weather driver

Hello,

I do plan on driving her but as it's not my only car I dont plane on letting see foul weather or even rain for that matter.

Hello RaceXGirl,

Yes the previous owner is happy that the car is going to be taken care of. She was actually interviewing buyers. It felt like an adoption rather than a car purchase. She gave me some pictures and told me some stories to go along with it.

Do you want to see spisific pictures of the rear of my RX4 or just General pictures of the model. The rear of these cars are very unique with the full decorative trim behind the 4 tail lights. I will post every angle of my baby when she gets here. In the mean time here are pictures I found off the web. These are obviously not my car. The rear one you can see a bit what the tail end looks like. The decorative trim should be more silver/stainless metal like in color but you get an idea if you click on the file and zoom in. The other shows a side view. I love how there is no B pillars when both the driver and rear windows are opened. After hearing about this model and researching its history I have come to really appreciate what Mazda had done and the 13B engine.

regrads

Max
