good sounding speakers

Hey I was looking to put some new speakers all around in my 2004 axela. Was. Wondering if a set of infinity's would sound good with no aftermarket amp or crossover installed? Or is there another brand that would sound better?

thanx,
Dan

I really think you are going to need an amp for any aftermarket speaker to sound good. The factory headunit is probably only putting out about 7 watts RMS.

so what is the 222 watts nonsense about then? I am fairly sure the stock bose sub @ 4 or 6 inches or whatever tiny size it is certainly isn't using up all 222 watts... unless the 222 quoted in all the sales literature is peak and not RMS

Yeah I was assuming non-Bose, I should have asked the OP first. Non-Bose system probably puts out about 7 watts RMS a channel. I'm sure the Bose number of 222 watts is a meaningless peak number. Even if the OP has the Bose I doubt the amp puts out enough power to properly run a decent set of aftermarket speakers. That being said, in a previous car I did run some aftermarket coaxials with my aftermarket headunit which put out 22 watts a channel RMS. They sounded decent (read: good enough for me at the time because I didn't know any better), but to really utilize the speakers to their full potential you should not under power them. The detail and clarity really comes out when the amp output is properly matched up with what the speaker requires.

so then what would you suggest I use. I'm reffering to both speakers and amp..is it hard to do the rewiring? Cuz isn't it a lot to have someone like car toys do it for you?

Well that all depends on exactly what you are looking for. First do you have the Bose or not? That will make a difference in your choices and the wiring. I'm planning out my system right now and I'm thinking I will use the CDT CL42 components paired with the Alpine PDX4.100 amp. I want the four channel becuase I will be adding a sub as well. If you're not going to do that you can just get a two channel amp for a lot cheaper. But in all honesty you'll probably end up wanting a sub too. I'm still learning this as well as I'm planning out my system, there's a lot of other people on here than know a lot more about it than I do. Also use search a lot of people have already asked these same questions.

alright thanks for your help. As for the Bose I'm not sure that I do because I see no "bose" trademarks on the speakers or the deck. I dunno if that helps, if not then I'd have to take apart my door pannel to really find out..

infinity's sound great in my cavalier.....amped of course....but looking into 6.5 components alpine type R for the M3...

I would not recommend Infinity speakers of any variety. Tweeters are harsh, and midbass is lacking. I understand their subs are pretty nice, but they haven't made good full range speakers for quite a few years now. Check out Polk, Boston, etc... Companies that specialize in making speakers.

I agree

I've heard a LOT of bad things about the current line of infinity speakers.

In addition to Polk and Boston, I would suggest alpine. I currently have alpine Type-R components in my car (switching them out to seas shortly) and I really like them (I'm only switching them out to try something new). The alpine Type-X components are getting very good reviews; and dont count out the pioneer premier line. They are exceptionally well built speakers, and very comparatively cheap.

I am also looking into alpine type r's for the price and reviews they seem like a good speaker....was looking at the boston's as well but with a bigger price tag, don't know much about them. Anyone hear anything on MB Quart? Polk's are not that much more than Alpine's Type R, has anyone had these before? Do you have a preference of which is better? Seems Polk has a little more RMS power.....referring to 6.5 components.

RMS power ratings are not important except for subwoofers and dedicated mid-bass speakers.

For your front sound stage, if you actually ran a speaker at its RMS power rating, you would go deaf within a few minutes...
