mazda protege 2002
im trying to get new speakers for my protege 5. i have been researching alot now and everyone is seemed to agree that the front speakers are 5x7. but im confused about the rear speakers. some people say that the 5x7 fit, others say 6 inch ( which is really hard to find ) or 6.5 or 6x8, im just really confused about the rear speakers? if someone can clairify what size the rear speakers are it would be a big help.

and sorry for bring up old news, or repeated questions, i am just not getting strait answers with all the research i am doing, and i just want a strait answer. thanks for the help guys!

i've been through the whole speaker deal too, i was given advice to just get the best fronts and screw the rears. exactaly what i did. (thumb)

The rears are 6". You can fit a 6.5" but you will have to remove the plastic ring around the inside of the door panel.

upfront 5x7/6x8 is stock, 6-1/2's fit with a fairly simple baffle, and 5-1/4's usually come with 5x7 adapter plates.

If you want it to be easy then just get a 5-1/4. If you remeber to trim out your doorpanel's splashguards before puttign them back on and cuttingup your surrounds then yes 6.5's will work.

In the future when it comes to audio and a protege there is only 2 things to keep in mind:
1. I am almost always right (thumb)
2. Almost everything audio wise you will ever need to know is already in my sticky threads in this section.

Your rear speakers are 6", THere is a plastic rain guard that can be trimmed to allow a 6.5" speaker to fit. Or you can make/purchase and adapter to get a 5.25" speaker to fit. Just so you know, most boston acoustic speakers are closure to a 6" then a 6.5" . The typicle 3rd generation protege sedans rear speakers were 6x9s not 5x7/6x8. The MSP was the exception that used rear door speakers the size of yours but they were kenwoods.

The newer mazdas like the 3 are different in that they use a rear 5x7/6x8. 5x7/6x8 are effectively the same size speaker.

I have tried to correct the inaccuracies of crutchfield and others several times to no success. So before you get to this one, yes an alpine head unit will fit in a protege and Crutchfield has the depth VERY wrong.

Thats becuase best buy is retarded. Why people continue to shop their I will never understand. You pay the same or more at BB then anywhere else to be told to go screw yourself if you have any problems after 30 days even though your product has a warrenty. (deadhorse

You need a 5.2" to 6.5" adapter. Depending on the speakers you got they may fit without it so give them a try first.

I believe cardomain.com has the brackets still.
