I icspots Paramagic : 2012 Mazda 5 Oct 31, 2007 #6 Technically the red is backlit and the blue is front lit. The blue lights are shining on the face of the gauges.

Not quite following you. -with the ignition on/lights off the face is black with red numbers/indicators -the button (between tach/speedo) toggles brightness of the red -the dimmer knob does nothing -with the ignition on/lights on the face is black w/ red numbers/indicators, and blue rings around the gauges. -the button toggles day night. Night is dim, day is whatever setting you left set when the lights were off. -In "Day" mode the dimmer knob doesn't effect the red stuff. -the dimmer knob dims the night mode red/blue, plus the center stack
