Full Skylight style roof? (think old mini-cooper)

Ok, I was at the dealer this weekend to check out the Rx-8s and what did they have?

They had a P5 there with ths convertable roof deal that slide from the windshield ALL the way back to the trunk area... It was like one HUGE skylight! Oh man.. I'm thinking I gotta have this deal installed...

Of course it was one of those "dealer installed" accessories that they ream you for.. They had that car marked up 2800 fo the roof, but siad they get charged about $1200-1400 to have it done at a local shop.

I should have taken some pictures, but this was just sweet....

What sort of structural bracing is where in the roof? anyone know how easily I'd kill myself if something landed on me with this roof?

well the dealership is a bit out of my way, but I'll be back that way Wed night, so I'll try to swing by and get some pictures....


it's a cloth topthat kinda rolls back. Its power operated and the only disadvatage I saw is that they relocate the maplight assemply to behind the back seat, so you don't really have any lights up fron anymore... Notthat I really ever use them, but it might be nice... Of course, you could always just open the roof to let a little light in now couldn't you?

you hit the nail on the head here...there IS structural portions of the body that goes from side to side in the area between the front and rear doors....by the B pillar....

Persoanlly....I think that dealer is opening itself to a HUGE LAW SUIT if whom ever buys that car ever gets in a bad accident and the top or side caves in.....as he has SERIOUSLY compromised the "CAGE" that is built into the structure of the car....

that roof may look nice....but you couldn't pay me to have one put in my car.....

NOW....a double sun/moonroof? one in the front and one in the back? that would be another matter....but not a skylight like the one you described.

If you notice in that video, there is a BMW 318TI with that roof. They brought over a few of those between 1996 and 1998 to the states.

I own a black 1996 318TI with the "California Package"

The roof is AWESOME! I barely use my A/C because once that top opens, all the heat is gone!
